2007 Maxon Motor Group Buy - Click HERE for Original Thread
Algar_emi
Hi. I'm starting this new thread for a new group buy of Maxon Motor from Maxon USA. I would like to get 5 motors to get a much decent price of about 90$ each. This motor can be use with Mark kelly great motor controller to build a killer turntable motor/controller combo.

The previous group buy prices were:
Here are the price breaks for motor 110191 a-max 26mm

1 $250.00
2 $125.00 each
3-4 $106.70 each
5-19 $83.90 each

Mark Kelly just gave us the controller pcb gerber. I can also supply the original pcb design or my own version to complete the kit.

We will see if there is any interest. Feel free to email me.

Thanks...
kilowattski
I am most definetly interested.
Algar_emi
So,we already have two names:

Algar_emi
kilowattski
SRMcGee
Algar_emi:

I've been toying with the idea of adding a separate motor and controller to my turntable, but would want to install the motor in a separate pod, away from the turntable plinth (a la Teres). Have you given any thought to expanding the scope of your group buy to include a box or cylinder to hold the motor and controller?

Regards,
Scott
kraljmatjaz
I answered i the other 3d too. Yes i am interested int the ogiginal Kelly controller and the Maxon motor.

Ciao,

Algar_emi
I already found an elegant solution for the motor pod from an other user project. It is a BIX Turntable motor pod. You can buy the motor housing alone, prices are (very reasonable I think):

Motor house 80 U$
Pulley 12 U$ (can be use in this project as well

I got the contact info on how to get these parts. From other user, I got that this pod is nicely done, black anodized. Dimension is 9cm height, not including pulley and feet. Rubber feet 3mm tall are removable.

Then, we only need to have a custom top mounting plate and we have a very professional looking motor pod. This is what this user did. Check the picture. I also have the custon plate drawing for this specific motor enclosure.

I can probably arrange for a local machine shop that I know to build the plate for us. Cost should be around 200$ for 4-5 pieces, so about $40 for the top plate.
Algar_emi
Here the diagram of the custom mounting plate that fits the BIX motor pod and the Maxon motor.
Algar_emi
Already 3 names, maybe four:

Algar_emi 1 motor
kilowattski 1 motor + PCB
kraljmatjaz 1 motor + PCB
sklimek
Hi algar_emi, is this the same 'stand alone' Bix housing for the motor pod?

I already have the Maxon but interested in the housing + plate.

Stan
Algar_emi
That the one. We can already get the motor pod, so you can get it by yourself if you like, send me a email.
I can put you on for the custom top plate.
Peter Daniel
I will take 1 motor and PCB.
Algar_emi
Thanks Peter.

This group buy is starting nicely. So guys you need to decide what PCB you want: the original Mark Kelly design or mine.

Differences are:
Mark Kelly: design done on two smaller PCB, dual speed (33-45) and fine control for both speed. Optional led indicators was proposed into his documentation but was not implemented into the PCB. Need a wallmart external transformer for the battery charger. See this link for the original documentation:

http://www.members.iinet.net.au/~qu...DC_Drive_2.html
http://www.members.iinet.net.au/~qu.../DCbrushed.html

My own design:
Same circuit plus these features:
Integrated battery charger supply
Main PCB has a notch to accept the battery to be mounted into the same enclosure. Provision for a bigger outside battery.
Integrated fuse for the battery.
Led indicators and control switched PCB
But just one speed (33) and rear panel fine adjustment.

See for detail: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/show...969#post1157969

If there is just 5 PCB, it won't probably be really cost effective to get the PCB made. I can make them myself for about 25$ each set. If we are around 20-25 then a real PCB could be realistic.
Aengus
Hi Algar_emi

I am interested in a pod, cover plate, and pcb (already have the motor). I did a quick google but couldn't find anyone listing the pod for sale by itself - if you don't include pods in the GB, could you please post the contact info?

I need 45RPM, so would want the MK version of the board, though I like your other add-ons.

Regards.

Aengus

[edited for clarity]
Algar_emi
No problem for the pod contact. Please contact Simon from www.diyhifisupply.com at: simon@diyhifisupply.com.

I got the price from him. It may be easier however to get a batch of motor housing in the group buy as well.

Feel free to get your own.

Algar_emi
Ok, I'm starting to get organize for this group buy. For any of you interested, please send me an email with your Name and Address.
I'll get your email as well in the same process.

I prefer PayPal for the payment. If you use PayPal you will need to add the PayPal fee of 3%. We will split together all parts cost, taxes, shipping and custom charges if applicable. I may accept personnal cheque, but you'll need to wait for the cheque to clear. I really prefer Paypal. It will be much easier for me.

Since it is an order of multiple parts from differents suppliers I would like to be pay in the following matter, so I don't get broke paying for everything first ;)

-One Payment for the motor and/or PCB.
-One final Payment for the mechanical Parts (Custom Plate, Pod and maybe Pulley)

Then, once I got all of your individual kit ready, I'll contact you and you can pay me the final cost + the shipping back to you. Naturaly, I will charge you only the actual shipping costs.

Is that ok for you?

Thanks...

Hi Algar,
A very timely group buy from my POV; I'm looking to improve one of my turntables and my friend Ray needs a motor and controller to repair his. Please put me down for 2 sets of motors and MK pcbs (we both need 45 rpm). We both have turntables that have a subplatter for the belt drive, so the Bix pulley would give the wrong gearing - unless the range of speed adjustment on the board is sufficiant to compensate. If it turns out that the GB can include suitable pulleys for our application we'd like two of those as well. I'd also like one of the Bix pods and custom top-plates. I'll PM you my details.
Cheers!
SRMcGee
Algar:

Are you sure you can't do 45 rpm on your PCB? I like the features that your proposal includes, but need that higher speed.

Regards,
Scott
Algar_emi
Hi everyone, good morning. It seems that things are moving fast during the night.

Since there is so much interest, I may revisit my own PCB and add the 45 speed, I guest you also want the front panel speed fine adjustment controls, right?

Realisticly, I would prefer to do just one type of PCB, so I may end including MK features in mine and be done with it

One easier way to do it would be to remove the battery space notch on my pcb and increase its surface. This way I can include a speed selection switch and two speed pot on the front panel PCB and the rest of the two speed circuitry on the main PCB. I can also probably shrink it a little bit. As always if this group buy progress the way it do, we can go for a manufactured PCB set.

I'll start to work on my new pcb version this week.

An other user just contacted me, Ed LaFontaine, is a wood turner. He offer to build maybe a wood custom top plate.

I mentionned that maybe not for the top plate that need rigidity and has to be very thin since the motor is very short, plate shouldn't be more thick that 4 mm. But that said, I'm not an expert in mechanic, metal stress and all this questions, so I may be wrong as well.

But maybe some may be interest to cover the motor pod with a nice wood covering as some of the Teres top model, see picture.
That would certainly improve the resonance control of the original BIX motor enclosure. It can also be use to increase the motor base and/or height if needed. Not mentionning the really great look that it can give to the motor pod :D

An other possibility is a record clamp for the Teres.

I offered that he joint this thread discussion. Feel free to express your interest and comments.
finneybear
Wow, that's the pod I am looking for! It will be even better that you sandwich the BIX pad, a layer of rubber, then the wood covering. I'd go for that!

A 33/45rpm capable SB definitely will be the choice! :)
Algar_emi
Don't get too excited yet. I'm not the one that will do it ;)
I'm just suggesting that Ed LaFontaine may do it for some of us, if he's interested. But that may be interesting indeed.
Ed LaFontaine
Wow!
Thanks for the introduction. I want to be considerate of Algar_emi and avoid taking his thread too far off topic....I'll submit to any limits you feel are necessary.
Let me caution anyone interested that I am simply a woodturner. I have no experience in providing turned items for inclusion on a turntable system. That being said, I saw the opportunity to do something in wood that was being offered in metal. I'd like to do so. I don't see anything rendered that I can't produce...I would be concerned for the mechanical properties of the finished work. I'm willing to prototype and proof items for acceptance.
Algar_emi
Welcome aboard Ed.
Algar_emi
Interest seems to settle a little bit. I'll start to do contact with Maxon and get a more firm quotation. I'll do the same for the motor Pod.

I'll wait two more weeks and if there is no more interest, I'll close the group buy. No need to wait forever. If we can reach about ten guys, that would be a nice group and enough work for me. We should get also a nice price for the custom motor plate.

So. if you're interested, act quickly
SRMcGee
Algar:

I'm tentative on this, depending on total cost, cosmetics and features. Please count me in the for the time being, predicated on 2 speeds and a bottom line that doesn't break the bank.

Thank you,
Scott
Algar_emi
A two speed version controller seems to be choice of almost evryone, so I will provide it.

Prices are almost all there more or less:

Motor about 90
BIX Motor Pod 80
Custom Plate (I would say about 250$ for 10 plate)=25-30$
PCB: 30$ + parts
PCB Parts cost me around 65$ with charger
(Excluding hardware (your choice of battery, case, knobs, connectors,etc...) that can vary a lot from users.

Plus taxes and duty charges if applicable, shipping cost, etc...

The BIX Motor pod is already finish black anodized, and finish is reported to be good. The Custom plate will be machined aluminium, we didn't discuss the anodizing yet. You can get a nice brush finish with just a 3M "scotch brite" pad a a little time.

This didn't include the pulley that you may need. It may be different from each application so we don't know yet. I'm trying to get the last year pulley design.

All in all it is not too bad considering that you will get a very high quality motor and battery powered speed controller. The original Teres motor and battery supply sell for 700U$ + TX, custom & shipping. You still need to provide some enclosure for the battery and its charger.

It is even cheaper if you arrange for your own motor enclosure and get only the motor + controller.

So you can probably already decide if it break the bank or not ;)

I may recommend that at least you get the motor, since it is the part the most difficult to get in single quantity at this price.

Bye.

See previous post, my estimate should be close to the real target. Just one PCB without the right motor do go with it is not very usefully. I know I tried to use it with my Mitchel Tecnodec but no luck. So if you want the PCB, you better get the motor too.

Chris Brady of Teres Audio called me back today, right after the Denver Audio Fest. I was very friendly and helpfull. A real gentleman. No wonder he built a renowned audio business. Client relation is the base of any real succesfull venture.

I was calling him to get price for the original Teres Mylar tape pulley. The price is quite raisonnable. at 25$ each. You can order the parts easily by paying with PayPal. Excellent customer service I must say. I will buy this pulley.

The original Teres pulley may be a nice alternative for this group buy if we cannot arrange to have the pulley made.

Finally he also mentionned that the mylar tape he recommend is 10mil thick compare to normal VHF tape that is only 5mil. I will buy also a lenght from him.

Count me in for one more pulley.
What about the Teres pulley + mylar tape? Will we have to buy them for ourselves or will it be part of the GB?

ergards,
Boris
Algar_emi
First one question. I don't know if Chris Brady of Teres will sell pulley for non Teres turntable. I don't why not but it can happen.

Indeed if you plan to buy the Teres pulley, you may as well buy it yourself directly. No real reason to buy them from Teres, ship them back to me then back to you. I don't expect any discount for such small quantity. Not including that you will pay two time for the PayPal fee. One to pay Chris, then to pay me.

However, it may be easier for people in Europe to order a complete kit from the group buy. In this case I may buy them for you.

I think we'll wait and see how things are going. An other user is already checking if he can build the custom plate and the pulley.

Bye.
Algar_emi
I got the first quotation from a local machine shop for the custom plate.

Prices are for a quantity of 10 (Price will be about the same for 10-15 plates)

Custom plate: 65$ CAN ea
Black Anodizing: 120$ CAN (Fixed cost for all 10 plates)

On top of that we need to add both taxes here in Quebec, 6%, then 7.5%

I asked an other shop. We will see.

ckniker mentionned to me that he had had a number of conversations with Chris Brady (Teres Audio) about the problems his customers have had with the motors before they switched to the (more expensive) gold (or precious metal) brushes.

The motor designed to work with Mark Kelly controller has indeed precious metal brushes, so we are getting the best. Thanks ckniker for bringing that detail up. See the included detailled motor specs sheet.

Done.

Well this is getting a rather nice group buy. Quantities are getting big enough to get some discount. However I would rather don't let increase quantity to much. 15 Motors and PCB will already represent a lot of money. The custom plate and pulley may be made by some friends, but I'm pretty sure that they won't make 50 of it

Just got the Maxon motor price from a Canadian distributor (i didn't know there was any). Price break seems the same as last year I think:

1 motor: U$130 each
5 motors: $100
20 motors: $85

I asked if we can get the same price for 15 than for 20, at 85U$.
Naturally taxes and shipping costs are extra.

They have 5 in stock. Delivery time is 1-5 weeks.

Keep you informed

Do you have the accurate dimensions?

I got this drawing from an other user that had this plate made for his own BIX motor pod. Anyway, I would had never go into the plate manufacturing without getting the BIX motor pods first. And the double chech the plate dimensions according to the real pod. I also want to send one pod to the machine shop with the order, so they can match the plate correctly to the pod.

Thanks for the info, any more informations on the subject will be very appreciated

I would be happy to help but I got lambasted on the other Mark Kelly thread. I just wanted to point out there is an error which would be unfortunate if you found it after the fact. The error is in the bolt circle pattern for the Maxon motor. Look closely and you'll find it.

Algar_emi.

Thanks for pulling this together and for kiliwattsski for pointing out where to post to get into this group buy.

I would like to add my name to the list for...

One(1) Maxon Motor.

Controller/Charger PCB Boards, the MK version, or your updated version with switching for 33 1/3 and 45 rpm.

PCB Parts Kit.

Again...Thanks for all your effort doing this group buy!

Can you be more specific Vinyl-Addict? I double checked the motor mounting pattern according to the Maxon motor datasheet. I cannot see the error, I'm probably missing something. The mounting pattern is 6 holes, 60 deg apart, following a 17mm circle. The mounting bolts are metric M2, that has 2mm diameter, so the 2.5mm screw hole seems ok too. See the included image.

Sean Henderson, I'm missing your email, please send it to me. Please take note that there is no plan to supply the PCB parts at this moment. Supplying these parts is a lot of work for such a big group, to count all these small parts, making sure nothing is missing is a lot of work. I know, I did it in the past. You will need to buy your own. At best, we may order some specific parts that need a minimum order, but it is not the case with this circuit. I was able to source all parts easily.

Thanks...

You got it. 17mm bolt circle. Your original sketch was hard to make out. Good luck.

Thanks. I sent the motor dxf file to the machine shop, telling them to match the motor monting pattern with the plate. My final plan is to send one motor and one pod to the shop to be sure there is no mistake. Thanks for your comment.

Guys, we are getting close the 20 motors. I will probably close the group buy then. Let's see if we can get there.

Hi All,
Im really pleased this group buy is happening, thanks to Algar_emi.
I have placed my order for PCB + Custom plate + Pod +~Pulley.
Also a plea for the PCB parts to be added to the group buy. I have had great difficulty sourcing all the components here in the uk. Lots were special order making them very expensive. Also finding the correct make of capacitors and resistors made quality a concern for me.
So please, please, please can we do the PCB parts as

Many thanks
Ian

Hello ,

i sent you PM with my adress and e.mail
Algar_emi
Hi webby. You're in. I guest you have the motor, right?

For the PCB parts I cannot garanty anything yet. As I said it is a lot of work and I was not really interested to get into all this work. It is already a lot of work to manage this group buy. I already have the controller and pod. That is not including the design of the new PCB and to get it done in a fab, etc... I'm not making anything out of it except to get a good price on the motor. I doing it to do my part for the group as other did it in the past. Usually what is good about a group buy, is when you manage it you can usually get some parts or PCB for you trouble, but not this time so far. Not including some others members are working very hard to get you great price on some items as the plate and the pulley. We all doing it also for fun.

If there is enough interest, I may proposed a parts kit, BUT in this case I will certainly charge some money for all the work that it imply. It won't be too much, maybe 25$ extra per kit. I estimate at least 2-3 hours of work per kit, to order, class everything, packed and ship.

If you really need it, I may let myself into it. Or maybe some other member can agree to do it.

Thanks again.

Hi algar

I would really expect you to add enough to get something for your trouble - a motor, a pod and plate, or...? I shouldn't have thought anyone would have an issue with that - but let's hear from some others.

Regards.

Hi Angus. As I said to other users, we may simply order the parts that are difficult to source for the PCB. Most parts are just resistors and capacitors and should'nt be to hard to get. It is the same thing for user with limited electronic background. I can always mount the PCB for them for a little fee. We can discuss details offline by email. I did it in the past. I would really like to have everyone of you guys to be happy with the project and to don't get stuck with an incomplete project. Don't worry we will find a way.

As I said, I'm doing all this mainly for fun and to help other guys. It is always great to use group buy to get kits at good price. I used it in the past numerous time. Now, it's my time ;) One thing great also about this forum, is contact that we devellop over the years with other members. There is always someone, somewhere to help us in our project. I never know, I want to build myself a Schroeder tonearm next. I may need help for it. Maybe someone can do it.

I'm always open to trade with other user. If someone else can help with my tonearm, I can even send him a complet PCB, assembled and fully tested. I'll take care of everthing for him in exchange for some tonearm parts. The important thing is to have fun since all this business is a hobby for me, not a job

Bye...

Here is a link to Mark Kelly's BOM or parts list -
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/show...2115#post902115
Algar will probably post his when done or it will mirror this one. Some of the parts like the L200C and the REF02 may be difficult to source out depending where you live, if you email me I'll send it to you. I would prefere not to do a 'parts kit' but please let me know if there is a specific regulator or IC that you are having trouble with.

Here my current Parts List. It is from the version 1.0 of my PCB.

Mark is using resistor Metal Film Dale RN55. I'm using more usual Yageo MF 1% resistor from Digikey. His also using extensively Wima MKP and Rubycon ZL capacitors. I'm using more standard Panasonic FC and Wima MKP cap easily available from Digikey and Mouser. Part of my job when I designed my PCB was to adapt it to easy to get parts.

The Dale RN55 are available from Mouser, but a lot of value are not stock and take a long time to get. This is why I try to use easier to get resistors. RN55C resistors are low noise and have +/25ppm/C temp coefficient and are 1/10W. They sell for $0.27 ea from Mouser (100 QTY).

The Yageo MFR-25 1% resistor are 0.25W, have the same +/25ppm/C temp coefficient. They sell for 0.04 for 200. Not bad...

The REF02 and L200C are available from Digikey, even if the last one is not stock at the moment.

For the BD/BC transistors, they are available easily from Newark.

We can certainly arrange something. Don't worry...
