I could get pretentious and say Battleship Potempkin, ( which is a stunning movie by the way) but this week I would have to go for Leon....
SY

faustian bargin
in no particular order:

casablanca

the good, the bad, and the ugly

star wars (the real star wars, made before evil aliens replaced lucas with a hollow plastic shell)

some like it hot

the wizard of oz
SY
Buster Keaton, eh? American fellow, if memory serves.
kingdaddy
Impossible to pick just one, and the list changes from year to year (for most I think)

Dances With Wolves
Ben-Hur
Fight Club (after at least 3 viewings)
Mystery Science 3000 The Movie (Funniest movie and series of all time)
Per Nielsen
Citizen Kane
jackinnj
why aren't we giving any space to "Seventh Seal"?

Citizen Kane brings up an interesting sidebar relative to American tastes -- we had a huge snowstorm in the midwest a few years ago and one of the planes stuck on the tarmac at Detroit had run out of movies to show. Someone had a VHS copy of "Citizen Kane", but when the stewardess began showing it people complained loudly that it was in black and white. I guess they wouldn't be able to show "Seven Samurai" or "Yojimbo" either.

And colorization is the bane of the kinophile's existence.
MRehorst
Definitely "Fight Club"

The Goonies
(saw this film when i was a kid. I liked it alot and saw it many times at the cinema. It must have made an impression, because when people ask me; what do you think is the best movie you have seen. I think of The Goonies. I have looked for it at videostores but cant find it. I would probably get very disapointed if I see it again.)
jackinnj

Chris

Zzzzzzzzz...... after 20 minutes.
I do not remember when it was. I would try it again as I like Stanley Kubrick's.

Most impressive one was CITIZEN KANE. I bought it (DVD) recently.

I second "Shawshank Redemption" as well.

"Trainspotting" was one of my favourites too. It gave the beginning to all those crazy british movies like "Snatch", "Lockstock and two smoking barrels", "Meanmachine" and recently "Formula 51"; really good humor.
kingdaddy
I almost forgot my favorite director; Terry Giliam

12 Monkeys
Brazil
