Old tube amp - Click HERE for Original Thread

I just got a couple of 40 years old Dynaco mark3 tube amps they are pretty smashed up, so i am thinking on restoring them, but the trafos dosent work anymore, so here comes the question anyone how knows were I can get some, I can use instead?

I have also heard that the Dynaco mark 3 is a very good amps, even today! Is that right or is it totally inaudible???and not worth saving?

Per,

Welcome to the forum:)
Which transformers don't work?
How did you test them?

Cheers,
Per Nielsen
Thanks!

The output transformers, the core is broken somewhere in both of them there is no connection on the primary side of the trafos.

Magnequest do reproduction ones from the original blueprints. But they're not cheap and shipping to Europe won't be either.

Model MQ 431 CL

Perhaps someone in Europe could make a replica, or you could get some second hand off ebay. They come up regularly.

Thanks for the advise

Which tubes should I youse for the mark 3? KT88 or 6550 and what is the diffrence? Sorry! That might be a stupid question for you guess, but this is my first tube amp!

Per,

Brian Sowter will wind some for you:

He is always happy to quote.

Hi,

Historically and technically....,yes.

As far as NOS goes you may be able to unearth some NOS 6550s but hardly a decent KT88 GEC.

The Dynasours will be happy with either current production KT88 or 6550A.

There are more differences between the remaining manufacturers than between the type of tubes nowadays.

Cheers,;)

Anything you might suggest, if the intention was not to restore, but to just use the iron?

If it's just the output tubes you mean then this is intersting to read:

COMPARATIVE LISTENING TEST

So based on their suggestion KT88s... anything suitable other than these? Triodes?

The Dyna OPT is 4300 ohms a-a, so,

300B / 2A3 / 6B4G
Trioded KT88s
EL84 trioded, parallel

and probably a few more when I get some sleep
Per Nielsen
Thanks for the advises!
So the best choice would be the kt88, but there is a couple of manufactors which one is the best? I am thinking on the sound

I like the Svets a lot. NOS KT88s are stupid money for my tastes.
Per Nielsen
Thanks
Is there any body who has anoter opinion?
or else it will be the svets

Not me...they're reasonably priced and reliable.
I'd go for them.

My first tube amp is working !!!

My Dynacos is now working!!
I have just yoused the night on rewindding the output trafos with copper core, and replaced the gz-34 tubes with dioedes
And it works and sounds fine
But is it healthy for the amps that I youse diodes insteads of the Gz-34's

Can a output tube be to old? the ones im using is more than 20 years! :bomb:
fdegrove
Hi,

Glad to see they're working again.

Most likely the B+ is now somewhat higher than before due to the lower voltage drop of the diodes, you may need to find out what it should be according to the Dyanaco circuit diagram and up the resistor value in the PSU.

It wouldn't hurt to have them checked and replaced if necessary.

UNCLE NED'S.
