Nope, the King had it fried in bacon fat.
He had a cook on stand-by 24/7 to make the calory bombs, even frequently had them flown in by jet from his fav place in TN.
Overhere, that King size doesn't count as a sandwich anymore.
I don't think the bananas did him in, so i skipped them for Ed, Mongo food.

(where i'm from, the saturday night drunk specialty is a grilled pork and peanut butter sandwich, at 4am you had to be pretty drunk to stand Harry's place and the regular customers at that hour. Harry looked gross as well)

Westley is paid up, thanks

While in Albany, GA on one of my away from home construction spells, I went in search of "soul food". I found it. The sign behind the counter said "No Refunds on the Chitterlings (aka, chitlins'), Ask for a Sample"....which I did....good advice.:whazzat:

Quick note...

The misc items are ONLY for those who paid allready, as it is reduced by the shipping amount, to avoid double payment on shipping. If you select the misc items for a brand new first order, it means no shipping is added to your transaction... and I get to foot the bill.

Big appologies to those new guys, inconvenienced. I can not process those transactions, and you will not be debited for it. Please just log in to your account and re-order useing the $9.99 PSU. You will get a new order number.

Someone has to pay the $7.50 shipping, I'm a pensioner, so I can't realy afford to hand out freebies.

Those of you who allready paid before the PSU boards were released, can still use the misc items to ensure you only pay shipping once... and I never have to pay it.

Ok Is Duda's stuff going to you then?, as Carlos' package also needs to go to Duda, and maybe one more Brasil order.

Never heard anything again from Braingel or Damon, so I guess they can come off your list, hope nothing bad happened to them though.

I'll send you mail with details for Chris.

Took a little break from makeing up packets... first three envelopes are ready to ship... took its time, as even the PCB's come with three accessories. The shop dropped me on the mica pads, and could only provide me with silicon ones. To try and make up for it, I included the header/jumper pins as well as the PCB spades.

cwujek's funds have arrived

All US participants that have paid for items from Nordic through yesterday are accounted for. Thanks

This leaves braingel & Damon who may have decided to pursue other things...we don't know.

There is another expression of interest from this Sunday morning. Nordic, you have mail for your consideration.
Nordic
Hi Ed, tell him to place his order... as long as he does not order PSU boards, I can ship with your stuff... else it will delay the batch.

I held back the PSU board order to ensure that I get proper doubleside masked boards this time. Will likely only be ready at the end of the week.

I will be adjusting prices in the catalog this week, to match exchange rate changes, also the shipping will change to weight based tables... as a single PCB set weighs 60g without the envelope and bubblewrapping... so anything more than the PCB + transistors will likely set me back $3 more.

I will only have more details by tommorrow when I go to the post office again... Just shipped the first packages this morning, which I'm told should take about a week for delivery. I send out shipping notices from the shopping cart... so you will be advised as your parcels ship.

Big sigh of relief.... seems I got through to the owner of the factory, when I explained how unhappy I was that they didn't put solder mask on top of our amp boards as per instruction. I also pointed out to him that other amps with similar and sometimes even larger sized boards, with dual masks and gold plateing were selling for the same price I got from them...

Well he said he would make a note of it, and it seems he did... the PSU boards exceeded my expectation.

I wan't to applogise for the delay this week, but it was completely out of my hands... just about every minute of every day for the last few weeks went into this project... please be gentle on me... The last batch should ship tommorrow, and you will receive a tracking no. by e-mail..

I am also trying to finish stuffing the first test amp module... parts were comming in in drips and drabs from overseas... and friends.

Hold on for some pictures

Please order, my wife and I will try to finish the packing and checking off items from the list tonight...

Please note I increased the price on the special offer by $3, as the shipping costs me that much extra for exceeding the first 100g (amp boards are 60g alone).

Those that allready ordered, don't worry, it will all work out in the end. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Fine boards Nordic - will make the completed amp project all the more satisfying.

NICELY DONE boet! I think I speak for everyone here that we all appreciate your efforts. Nice touch on the spades and the silicone insulators, I didn't expect that :D

Maybe I should get some PSU boards...

PS, did the shipping I sent you cover the cost? I see you sent them overnight (I think that costs more than I thought?) If not, I'll take some PSU boards as well and just add the difference. There really is no need for you to do yourself in.

Cheers

Hi oom Gert, I owe you some jumpers for the header pin selectors... and shipped yours without the vero-board strips for the bias servo. Was going to send it in an envelope, but if are going to order the PSU, I'll send it with that....

The shipping you paid me was correct for local overnight...

Price is the same as the amp, account is still the same... you know what to do... just drop me a mail when done.

Despite all that can be good for you health..... menthal health in special, as we feel good cooperating with folks.... love is always the answer... so easy... so easy to feel good when we do things for others, without any bigger interest than to see people happy and smiling.... this is an enormous payment, despite people do not realise that.

I really think, dear Nordic, next group buy.... a second package that will happens when those folks construct, publish their findings, reviews, comparisons, personal evaluations, pictures and all stuff.... if no bad surprises appear.... for sure a second package will happens and should give you a small return.

The price is very small.... i really think, to the second package you should include some small and discrete profit, kindly inserted into the cost price....not fair to bother your lovely wife working this way... without no return... at least some small profit that would produce some flowers to her would be great.

Give flowers to her dear Nordic....but be carefull.... all flowers i have offered, or sent to my wives resulted in one more son...ahahahahaha.

Flowers are great... you should think about my suggestion.

I wish i could give you a Hug dear Nordic.... you deserve a nice and warm hug.

You made very well.... job very well made... i think you are able to manage boards to many group buys, to many projects...you are going to details, those supply voltage terminals.... those small details are lovely...everyone loves those things...this is excelent.

I must say what is going on inside my heart.... i also cannot wait to receive the boards you are sending me... thank you very much..... this Christmas i will have a nice gift from you.

Please, post pictures during your construction.... they are good to see....let me enjoy together you.

PS: about the profit "controversy", don't feel guilty, as it is perfectly ethic to earn a reasonable income for a work well done...and I'd prefer anytime to send money to a good man (and good friend) instead to a large multinational company ;)

PS2: Karma (Sanskrit: kárma, kárman- "act, action, performance")
Nordic
I got them localy from one of my suppliers... If you can get real toshiba's go for them, I still suspect mine not to be authentic...

Main reason is we don't know how durable the ISC transistors are in the long run... I will see if they can last a month or so, once our summer heat sets in.... If today's measurements are reasonable, then I expect heatsink temperatures around 50C once we hit those 40C+ days....

Nordic
Wow Sheldon, I needed a bit of a pickup, not been my day these last two days.... mom was diagnosed with cancer again and I made a little booboo which is going to set me back $300 etc... **** normally happens in 3s, so I am keeping a low profile now :P

Please use the 18R resistor and a parallel inductor if you are not 100% sure your speakers are very easy loads... and test with a cheap speaker first... now that you guys are starting to get your stuff I will have to squeeze in a few minutes to update the construction details on the site...

DJ my bra, hit the e-mail button under my name, I will let you have boards at a bit cheaper than the website as we avoid creditcard transaction charges etc... I estimate about R150 includeing overnight shipping for a set... although I am still 4 sets behind in shipping... so it will ship overnight, but not neccesarily be ready in one day... I picked up extra parts yesterday... so if you are interested in the kits just drop me a note as well.

Each set requires two quad sets of matched input transistors so that is 8 transistors to be finely matched, then there is matching

Then transistors that are not in pairs like in the VAS need to be matched so that the two channels are matched etc... it is ALOT of work... and at the current priceing a basement bargain... not to mention the matching of resistors etc... it could only be done to the quality levels of my cheap meters, but it is still done and still takes the same amount of time...

If you ordered transistor kits, you will noticed that they are grouped in 2s 1 pair is for left other for right...

I wonder how suitable these are with given that they are meant for 50hz operation....
Francois G
Thanks for pointing out the potential problem. Buyers beware!

That said, I'm not concerned. It's specified as 1KVA transformer, so it should be able to provide, even at lower efficiency, the needed 500 watt or so. Additionally,

My understanding is that a transformer with a core designed for 50 Hz will work well at 60 Hz (have higher inductance?). The other way around is where one should should be concerned (a 60 Hz transformer may not work according to specs if used at 50 Hz).

I'm not an EE so others please comment.

normal 35 to 37 volts suggested.

The rail regulators produces a losses that goes from 2.5 to 5 volts DC to each rail, so, the zener are there to produce the needed reference voltage.

Using higher rail voltages (no problem) you will have the need to increase the zener or, at least, to introduce Led in series to provide increasings of reference voltage.

The use of lower voltages than the suggested will turn the rail regulator unefective... they will need tweaking to loose 2.5 to 5 volts, each rail, refered your selected supply voltage.

The amplifier will work from 15 volts (stable) to 42 volts without any modification.... bigger than 42 volts will need some small tweaks, for instance, the 12V zener diode feeding resistance.

If you decide to big voltages, remember that you will need more output power pairs too.

Also, you can remove the rail transistors and install resistances from colector to emitter, calculated to produce the needed loose of voltage to separate the input from the output... the thread has details about that some pages ago....not only about supply voltage increasings, but also, even older post, about how to calculate the rail regulators, how they work, how to tweak them.

Also the current consumption, refered to the first stages was informed, and with this one and ohms law calculation you can substitute the whole thing by simple resistances.... you may need to do that till you find the needed zeners for your new supply voltage.

I hope you will appreciate the sonics...please, do not forget to publish pictures and your evaluations into the main thread related those amplifiers.

Be very carefull with supply polarity.... a lot of good folks already inverted those wires... i did that, in my whole life, more than 200 times!

If you have doubts and need some information, i am gladly receiving mails into:

panzertoo@yahoo.com

Carlos

Lol you ca nbuy it and send it to me for christmas, we hum at 50 Hz down here...

Carlos,

Thanks for your very helpful reminder.

If I use the transformer mentioned above with 120VAC input I should end up with 40VDC at idle, if it runs according to specs. So I will replace only the rail regulator zener references

But I also plan to build a HRIII later - for that I will connect our 120VAC power to the 100VAC input on this 1KVA transformer. We actually get 125VAC from the wall plug, so I should end with about 50 VDC. I will have to figure out how many power transistor pairs I need then, and do all the tweaks you mentioned, or just use your HRIII schematic, and Nordic's new board (?) for it.

Thanks for initiating all this fun!

Francois

Nordic
Hi the ETA in the states is roughly on Monday....

Oh about that transformer, you can't use it in 60Hz zone... you can use a 60Hz tranny at 50Hz, but you need to derate output by about 10%.
Ed LaFontaine
A timely question...and a quick response...Thanks Nordic, the packages will be addressed and waiting for the goods to arrive.

I perceived sounded better with i install a load to the player..the 33 ohms resistance .... one to each channel.

Also my player had noises when playing into very low levels...the capacitor killed the noises.

Observe the gain resistance, 220 ohms because of the player low output level.

Hi Nordic

I hope you are finding energy to deal with the stuff you are going through - I am sure other people here have you and your family in their thoughts and prayers.

Like everyone else, I am chomping at the bit to have my crack at the DX HR-II. How is yours after a few hours of listening? Also, how is the higher power version coming along?

Did you have a chance to ship my stuff (and Carlos' too)? I am pretty sure Carlos is getting his mind busy with other things, but cannot wait until his boards (and goodies) show up.

Cheers!

:cubist:

Honnestly, i don't know, but I think so, I have a bag with the last few envelopes inside that I have to take to the post office a little later this evening, also have some others that shipped allready that I had not had the chance to send off tracking numbers for yet. Will try to finish that all off tonight some time so that I have the weight off my shoulders... it was a very big project...

Still have some boards left (not many) so I'll have to have some made again, for your future orders... also made extra resistor booklets and transitor bags to speed up future orders...

Also with that order will be speaker protection modules...

PLEASE USE 2A fuse in series with the speaker during tests at least... (for 8 ohm loads) (for 4 ohms use a 3 or 4A)
destroyer X

I will be happy to know our boards are travelling Duda.... this is the first time i am sure i will receive something from outside Brasil.

I have already made that question to Nordic..he is very busy those last days...also a little disturbed because his mum is sick.

here is the text i have prepared, because people will start to construct.

I wish you the best folks!

.......................................................................................................

I am asking you, folks, not to forget to install fuses
into your amplifiers.... install into the rails and also
into the output, as rail fuse burning will produce big
off set into the output.

Nordic, once, had problems, those things happens,
and happened with a tested amplifier...had operated
for hours and he faced problems... i do not know
exactly the component that burns.... maybe accident
because of humidity near the circuit...not sure yet.

But, even not because off accidents, we know damn
things happens.

Because of that, i have tried, and once again...maybe
the third time i did that, to burn the amplifier:

I have connected, using wet fingers, the output to
the input, to force oscilations and radio frequency
pick up...had not problems.

I have increase the sensitivity, the gain resistance
was dropped to 100 ohms...even this way, no problems

I remove the input RF capacitor, the feedback line cap
too, the Miller capacitor was reduced to 10pf, all stop
resistances removed, all rail 100n capacitors removed,
the regulator capacitor and condenser removed, the rail
condensers removed (the capacitor, into rail left side
was keept...without it, really, is a crime!)... i have
removed the bootstrapp...you see... two resistances
and nothing into the mid way, to the ground, this uses
to produce oscilations, low frequency oscilations and
noises...and nothing happened.

Not satisfied i have changed the input transistors to
600 gain units.... the units were for 200 Megahertz...and
no problem there too.

I have tried 200 Megahertz transistors as drivers, also
i tried the “perfect oscilator”, the 2SC2240, the unit is
nice for sonics but loves deeply to oscilate... all rigth!

The second VAS i tried a switching transistors...well
the unit oscilated (YES).... i have to install capacitors
from base to colector (220pf) to stop the unit...so....
this can kill the amplifier.

I have used long wires, mess made into the board...even
VAS used long wires (and cannot do that!).

I have injected square wave..... 3 volts peak to peak, 100
Hertz and 20000 Hertz... saturating he input...nothing
happened....nothing has burned, also the fuses survive.

I have constructed a spider passive crossover (assassine!)
and nothing happened.

I have used high capacitive cable to speaker... coaxial...with
small distance from the shield to the inner conductor...fine!
I have not submerged into the watter....not waterproof...also
not protected against Radio Frequency if your aerial is near
the amplifier....my cell phone (900 Megahertz i think) enters
and saturates de amplifier when send tones to the remote
antennas around, one antenna is 150 feet distant from my
home....yes...entered!...but this normally enters if your amp
is not shielded using metal can over it... and even doing that,
if you keep holes bigger than 2 milimeters diameter the radio
signal enters.

I have removed my condensers into the supply to see if the
amplifier could burn...had noises, of course..but survived.

Boys, folks, friends, bud...i made all i could to offer you
a reliable unit...tested, checked, constructed many times...
and made that to be entirelly sure that you will succeed.

So...be sure, if something did not worked fine... check the
unit till you find inverted parts, errors into resistance values,
errors into condensers, defective condensers or capacitors,
inverted transistors, damaged transistors, supply wire
inverted..shorts caused by solder under the board (always
clean with a hard brush after soldering, and inspect with
lenses)..... check if speaker cables if shorted, openned or
speaker driver defective.

I wish the best for you all...i hope you like and enjoy the
amplifier...my pleasure is your satisfaction.

- Rail resistances during first adjustments and fuses when ready
to go!

Been haveing a few issues with the catalog's mailing system, but if you did not receive a tracking no. by mail, just log into your account... the details should be displayed there...

The tracking isn't realy good for anything... maybe for local parcels... but at least it shows you things are moveing along....

Sadly it is that time of year when mail moves slowly... walked past the post office to go get some envelopes yesterday... and their parcells was stacked all the way from the room where its normaly kept to right behind the cashiers at the counter almost a meter high... glad I'm not them....

As for Ed's group there has been a customs delay... but I can see from TNT's tracking that the stuff is on its way as of 9 o' clock Monday evening... so, Ed, it should pitch up tommorrow or the day after.

/OT to Carlos:

I had a nice talk at the European Triode Festival with your countryman Eduardo de Lima, owner of Audiopax. This man has quite interesting ideas Carlos. Do you know his amplifiers?

Thank you, but really, my work was very pleasant...as i do that in a very happy way, and fast constructions too.

the one that really deserves congratulations and thanks is Nordic...this one faced some problems to do the job...let's say he is very busy, and feel pains into the shoulders... not completelly and entirelly healthy man..... courage is his name...his name, Nordic, do not show us the true about him... in my mind his name is courage or brave man...he faced all challenges, to find board's supplier, to arrange and to make a web site, to create many boards, including protection boards, supply boards...well..to manage the group buy.

This amplifier succeed because of Nordic...also Greg had helped me with the Dx Standard...the first thread amplifier... and he pushed the amplifier that had a big quantity of constructors too.... and people are continuing to construct even those days we are living now..

Because of him.... Nico Daneel, our dear Nordic, my dearest nephew in my heart.... God bless him, and make you all thank him, to warm his big heart, with our gratitude.

regards,

Carlos

No, i do not know him... i am living in the most poor place in my country, the Northeast is very poor in knowledge related electronics... i think this man is from my home town... Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, our 2 main towns.

It is possible that he is working with electronic tubes too... and this is something i do not use to be around....no parts providers here..so...no way to be interested on that.... also mails having expensive tubes inside is very dangerous.

We have, in this country, some very interesting folks...mainly into the Italian town called São Paulo...also into the french town, Rio de Janeiro..... here.... people has lower interest in those things..they are more addicted to music here.... produce songs, to sing songs, to create bands... they are more artistic than technicall... they buy Macintosh and this is all about audio... also power is prefered to quality..we have enormous trucks with thousands of watts and people dancing over those giant trucks...power is the main thing... musical quality is the second..audio quality is not really their main focus.

If the man you told... Eduardo i think, is doing transistor schematics or something alike, please, inform me how to met him, mail adress, home page of something to contact him... we have some special people related our hobby... i would be happy to met him.

I think the one works with tubes, and inox steel chassis...nice and very, very, expensive units.... good idea to his pocket (Bank bill) also..ahahahahah.

Carlos

Carlos, shame on you.

Probably too many painters, futebol players and Gracie capoeira artists with the same name walking around ?

and Martial Art... and many other arts.

The family Gracie..... started with Hélio Gracie (H has no sound here) worked with Jiu Jitsu since i was very young end sixties... he is very good into Martial arts of figth... i think, now a days, his son is the Gracie family main figther.... the old Gracie may be too much old... now a days he may figth against fork and knife to avoid overwheigth in USA i think.... or eating into the Macdonalds... 7 to each 10 brazilians are now a days overweigthed.

Northeastern brasil people are excelent in all type of arts, everybody has rithm in their soul and body... flexible folks..good to dance, to make sports, to sing, to have fun.... also hard workers, huge people... very social they are....nice people to leave together.... peace and harmony exists here, and it is natural into this people.

But i think they are not too much addicted to science and technology... say..... more than 80 percent of the people has no interest about those things.... local characteristic.... and very different from other sites.

I could see they cannot be fixed into a single subject for more than 20 seconds..so...no way to follow a schematic...disperse (eyes, ears are capturing the world all time long, watching and listening many things...cannot focus one special object or conversation for too long) into their mind...not all...for sure there are the focused folks here too.

There are exceptions... they are inside the 20 percent not mentioned.

I hope you are doing well Jacco... i wish you a Merry Christmas my dear friend.

regards,

Carlos

None of us is in doubt about Nordic's enormous work collecting, handling and distributing this project. And i'm sure we all have great respect for that, and the overall nice mood there is in this thread.

But.... In my mind, You have some respect coming Your way too Carlos. After all, You have constructed this amplifier, and are still very dedicated to see people through a "healthy" building, noone will feel lonely and lost sitting with Your project.

A big thanks to both of You for this great ( and cheap ) chance to get some "candy" for our ears :D

Best regards

You have made my day...it is good to make friends, to be usefull, to contribute and to know people will count on us...that facing problems they will call us with confidence on us.

Nice that.... i am in stand by to everyone, in special Dx amplifier constructors.

But in the reality.... 50 stereo kits mailed is really a very big result..and this was because of Nordic's hard work.. he made things very easy for us.... very cheap.... his dedication produced this excelent result.... his payment will be our gratitude, our kind words and the fact we recognize his effort, competence and good will with all of us.

Evaluating the time spend... since he started with that... he was very effective, very good result.

I hope he decide to produce his own amplifier, and soon start to receive some profit from his work... he deserves that.

I have ready amplifiers.... very good ones... already designed that i offer to him to make them his units... to sell those units...but it seems to me he wants to make his own ideas.... for sure this is better and will produce more variation into amplifiers provided from...and for DIY members.

Carlos

If your shipping zip code is 85008, please contact me.

All others (11) have been sent across the counter this morning from zip code 40403. Please allow 2-3 days for delivery. I opted for delivery confirmation for peace of mind.

Kudos to Nordic for the elegant choice/use of packaging. 13 packages (mine included) arrived in a modest-sized box.
Also of note was the reference # system you employed which made tracking and getting them across the counter much easier.

Believe me when I tell you my anxiety increased with every mention of boards having been recieved/amps in progress. You get to share in the fun in just a few more days.

I have considered doing this one of the responsibilities I have to all of you. I won't count the number of times I've been on the receiving end of someone else's generosity here. It is for myself, and I think all of us, a responsibility to look for those opportunities to contribute in some way. I participate in several forums. diyAudio is the best place to be.

I am glad you are around, helping us.... Nordic and all folks.

Hi Ed, if I can help, drop me a message...

Sorry, I was not here today, went to visit my mom, which is a 160km (100mile) roundtrip.

To the rest of you guys, you are too kind.

And I have to say that being dependant on a pension, my love for electronics could have died an early death if it wasn't for gifts of components etc. when I started out... We are listening right this minute to an amp I built like that, entirely out of components sent to me by a forum member...

I know Carlos's parts tins are pretty empty now, maybe you can put a few small components in an envelope and share your love with him, small things only, low value items, so he is not burdened by customs.

(HRII has its guts open for installation of protection modules, one side is a little sluggish in switching on innitialy, but I think it is just a resistor I need to adjust a little, I was a bit conservative in allowing current to the delay pin. but otherwise they seem to work just fine - is quite a job to keep the wireing neat, but everytime I rebuild that amp, the wireing gets neater... This time I also spaced the boards further from the heatsinks, as i was getting a capacitive coupling effect where if the sinks were left isolated from ground they would induce sound when touched - they were quiet when grounded, but I found it weird that an isolated peice of metal would be able to induce noise. I now have a bit more than 1cm between the metal and the PCB).

I hope you all get your parcels soon if you don't have them allready, and I look forward to your opinions on the sound and reviews on the kits.

And subsequent orders... next batch of PCBs will look like the blue PSUs... as those of you who got them allready can attest those boards seem thick enough to survive the species and you will have to apply quite a bit of force to them to break them, which is good I think in terms of warping.

The next model will also have slightly bigger pads, so that those of you with cheap large bit soldering irons will have less problems... my .4mm bit made light work of everything, and cost les than $2...

So far only one parcel returned to me undeliverd, but it has been resent and the person advised allready... everyone will have their stuff soon I'm sure.

Ed,

I have to agree. I have made many new cyber friends on this forum and other forums as well. It almost gives you hope for the future despite the present world situation. I have never experienced so may friendly people from all over the world, with different languages, customs, etc cooperating in such a nice way...it gives me hope and puts a smile on my face...
