Many thanks to Jack C and Ed for all the help offerd, and to Sheldon with lots of constructive advice on the schematics and files... (oops I remember now, i still have to upload the version E files... life has been hectic this week)
JackC. Rellum, Meanman and Stevox's payments are done.
I thank you for your extreme patience up to now, this was my first experience starting some kind of shop, I am more used to working in the corporate and service environments.
But, finaly we are up and running and your groupbuy is a GO!
Please don't exceed the amounts you have advised, just add a note in the comment field, that you want more, and I will advise you if there is some stock left when we start shipping. (I had a few extra units made)
I negotiated doublesided soldermasks with the white silkscreen, so the boards should look realy nice... Carlos likes blue. And as said before, the copper is double the standard thickness at 70 microns or 2 oz. in the 4 countries still not doing the metric thing. |

Hi Nordic,
I just tried to create an account on your website
but I could not make it.
It did not accept my state selection and continued asking me to select a state from the list.
I tried to enter the state via keyboard before the selector appeared, but that did not work either.
Do you know a workaround for that?

Thank you guys, I just processed your orders.
Great, I love it when a plan comes together.
I went to fetch the transistors this morning but the BD139s were not in yet, I told them I'll come back for it in one batch on Monday.
Wait, I think they actualy deliver on larger orders.
I got the vacuum sealer this morning on the market for R45. (+-$5)
I had one just like it, but, someone borrowed it and dissapeared.
They are almost R300 in the shop.
I can confirm the order has been placed at the factory and the 66% deposit paid, if that will bring you guys some peace of mind. |

Hi Francois, what a lekker boer name you got.
I had a bit of a crisis with the cat that the vet sent home yesterday. It kept us up all night, took him back this morning, and the vet said it was nothing serious and sent him home... went fine for an hour or two, then he had a seizure and we had to rush him to an emergency vet, quite far away.
Needless to say I am a little drained and need a bit more time to give everything a once over before I upload it. Will likely do it in a few hours, just need to unwind a little. |

Message for US buyers::
If enough of you are interested I can ship your packages inside a single box to Ed, useing a tracked 2 day courier. You would still need to pay ED, I would assume through paypal, for shipping from him to you. But your envelopes will allready be prepared and ready for quick shipping. Meaning you will likely have your packages within a week of dispatch.
I do not trust regular registered mail enough to put such an expensive batch through in one box. It is easier to replace one or two missing postal items out of my pocket...
Just post here or drop me a mail, just say Courier or Mail
Thanks for the wonderfull support.
So far, exludeing the last order, you have paid for; 16 PCBs, 12 transistor sets and 9 resistor sets. |

Soo...ship to Ed or not? Looks like we really don't know yet.
Nordic, whatever is easiest for you is fine with me. Either to Ed or not up to you. I've paid and paid shipping but if I have to pay Ed again it will not be a problem. Then again if you don't want to ship a big box to Ed you can ship directly to me (you have my address).
Just let me know what you are planning to do and its all ok with me. |

Hi let me just simplify
Courier > Safe, I can send one box to Ed, by combining your shipping that would have been used for registered mail. Ed would obviously incur a cost in shipping it the last bit to you.
Registered airmail, Less safe, I will send mail to individuals... but can replace missing parcels.
Either way, what you pay me, is the same... it is just that we need about 10 guys to make up the amount the courier wants... if we can get to 9, I might spot you guys the diffirence in the courier bill. |

If you are undecided on your case work, here's what I have done. There are likely to be commercial sign makers in your area as there is in mine. They use a lot of aluminum sheet, angle, round and tube sections. They recycle the scrap. From that I have found material to make the top & bottom of enclosures. Angle makes great brackets with which I join heat sinks to the rest of the case. If wide enough your input / output connectors can go there as well.
This presumes you have some equipment to drill & tap holes. A table saw can cut sheet with the proper blade and personal protection. Cover the motor if it is not totally enclosed. You don't want shreds of aluminum in there!...:hot: |

Hi Konkret, no, I would have to buy 100 of each from the local Toshiba distributor to get prices almost comparable to singles from places like Digikey etc, which charge little over a dolar each.
My cost would still be over $2... it does remind me, there is one place i have not phoned. I will give them a shout.
Will check for you where you can get the transistors in Germany or europe from a trusted source and good price, and advise you later.
Maybe some of the members have suggestions..
Ebbe I did not put through your payment, as I needed to speak to my supermerchant first.

Hey, I finaly got the transistors, anyone feel like trying to match 500 of them? | Hi,
group them in batches of hFE using a DMM.
Then within each group find your matched pairs of Vbe vs emtter current.
You may find that the top end of one batch may match closely with the bottom end of the next batch. |
|
|
| Nordic |
I am in fact mostly geared towards your matching methods as also discussed in other threads... this will likely make life easier...
for the smaller transistors , I have drawn up a jig useing similar parts to the actual input stage, to kind of test them in circuit... |
|
|
| AndrewT |
Hi,
the Vbe matching is much slower than hFE matching.
My suggestion avoids the problem of testing Vbe with grossly mismatched hFE which throws out the usability of the Vbe results.
If you have devices that are close together then the next stage of Vbe matching becomes easier and quicker. |

Hi Nordic,
I forgot to ask, what is the make of your precision resistors?
M |
|
|
| Nordic |
OMW, I will have to ask the shop to be quite honest.
I can in some cases hear a diffirence between a carbon and a metal film, but can't tell one film from another, at least not in this price range.
I can imagine 0.1% resistors (the 100R ones) would have a good result, but for the kits I can only supply 1% metal film resistors, further matched out manualy on my desk.
As stated before the boards will now accept a 10mm pitch resistor incase you would like to experiment with some fancy resistors.
Once again, in practice, this is what is in my prototype boards, and I can't say I have had the inclination to change anything on there. |

Hi Nordic,
sorry that I have to post this in here... cause the original thread from Carlos has been very long... and I believe he is busy working on the next generation DX...
do you know what is the input impedance of the HDII version?
this is important for me since I need to calculate line level notch filter that I like to experiment with...
also, what is the input sensitivity of this amp? (or gain actually? with recommended power supply voltage?)
I wonder if using simple passive preamp just a pot like my gainclone would work... (my gainclone with +/- 25VDC PSU has pretty sensitive input at 0.6Volt so I can easily use just a pot for passive "preamp")

Unfortunately my meter goes only to 2Meg ohm... not enough to measure for you... just post in the DX thread, Carlos checks it, and will gladly provide the info.
The board factory just phoned, they would have been done allready, but apparently the board v-scoreing machine got stuck... guess they are not dealing with such big orders every day.
They said I can collect tommorrow morning.
I am now going to send off PSU boards to the fab, I redesigned the PCB to take 35mm caps as I would later, when finances allows for it, like to install Sikorel caps there... will just have to manualy drill holes for the 13mm nuts on those. In the meantime it accepts standard 10mm snap in caps. Low ESR units are commonly available in 35mm.
I expect the price to be about the same as the amp boards, allthough it may differ a little due to the smaller order.
I will request qoutes on 1 and 2 oz, but I think 1 oz is more than enough considering trace widths.
I guess going on past experience, these won't be ready before Tuesday.
Let me know if you are interested, and want to keep your order so both orders can ship together.
As always, a PSU is not a cheap item. this is my first amp I feel deserves some good caps (>$10 each) (my prototype is working happily on $2 caps in the meantime).

You need 1 PSU per transformer...
So for stereo amp with shared transformer you need one PSU board,
For monoblocks i.e. 1 transformer per channel you will need 2 PSUs for a stereo set. |

Gotcha, what does it do?
I got the boards today, I was a little unhappy, as they only put soldermask on the bottom, and used the guillotine when the v-score machine broke (apparently it is fixed again now).
Luckily they cut the boards larger than the corner marks, so a little fileing should make em look tip top again. I am happy with the silkscreen, and the soldermask is 98% ok, probably equal to normal commercial grade. Do scrape away some mask on small pads, if you are scared you can not get the solder in.... one pad that caught my eye was on D1. Some of them are just fine though.
If you don't own flux, go buy some... it will help your soldering 500%.

When components are located on copper planes it prevents the heat from the soldering iron escaping into the large copper surface.

Soldermasks only go on the side with the traces and solder. On a single sided board that's on the bottom side of the PCB.

I always sand my PCB edges. I use a piece of fine sandpaper on a flat surface and sand until the colour of the edge matches the PCB surface colour.

Do you use rosin cored solder? I've never needed extra flux on soldering PCBs. I do clean the PCB with alcohol before soldering to ensure all traces of oil are removed.
BTW: I've soldered a lot of different metals over the years with lots of different fluxes.

| Thanks guys...I was asking about the amp's C1-C2 caps, indeed... :( |
|
|
| Nordic |
Yes Ed, it does.
Some notes;
I supplied both 0r22 and 18R for the output, if your crossover is not too complicated, first try just the 0r22 on the output. If it sounds dull like someone keeping a cushion over the speaker, do the following, bridge the position of this resistor onboard, then used the 18R in parralel with a large inductor in series with the speaker out. The binding post would be a solid connection point....
Also, I pre-adjusted the trimpots, so they are tested and ready for installation, following the silkscreen screw position. They are in plastic antistatic cases to protect them.
They should require no/little adjustment, but instructions will be available as soon as I had a day to breathe after this.
If you ordered the resistor kits and allready have the caps on hand, assembly should take 30 minutes to an hour, as you won't have to sort through strings and bags, they come in a booklet form.
If I knew a groupbuy would involve so much work, I would have worked a profit margin in. :clown:
After the groupbuy I will have to adjust the prices, it was an honour to be able to share this amp with you guys, but at some point it will have to become profitable so I can pay my fair share of advertising dues here on DIY audio. The moderators have been most generous thus far. |

PSU PSU PSU
I will add the PSU PCB's to the online catalog just now after eating.
If you want it to ship seperately, select the PSU from the catalog,
then the price will be $9.99 per PSU pcb + $7.5 shipping
if you want it to ship with your current order choose Misc. on the catalog, I have only figured out how to do flatrate mail charges on the catalog so far, it will show as $2.49, but the checkout will add $7.50 "shipping", which will make up the $9.99 price.
To order two PSU pcbs select Misc. x 2, this will be $11.48 before the $7.50 is added.

The PSU is pretty universal, and can also be used with gainclones etc. |

Also, I pre-adjusted the trimpots, so they are tested and ready for installation, following the silkscreen screw position. They are in plastic antistatic cases to protect them.

You are spoiling us Nordic :D I can for sure understand why You need to adjust prices a bit, it's only fair.
Your effort is really appreciated, You and Carlos should be on "the wall of fame" if there was a such in this forum.

Ok, so I am going to use one PSU PCB per stereo set. The power supply will be outside of both the amplifier boards, to keep out any possible noise. Since both amplifiers will be drawing off a PSU made for only one amplifier (I believe), won't I have to increase the wattage rating of the resistors and also increase the capacitance of the PSU caps? Or was the PSU overdesigned to take this into account? Sorry if this is a novice question, just want to make sure I do this right.

Hi,
I recommend the PSU RC time constant be at least double the input filter RC created by the DC blocking capacitor.
If you run two amplifiers each driving an 8ohm speaker, then the PSU sees an effective 4ohm load.
Using 4*4.7mF (with 0r0 between them), the RC= 4 * 0.0094 = 0.038 = 38mS.
The input filter should be set to <=19mS.
This will attenuate the low bass significantly.
I suggest at least doubling the PSU capacitance and you may hear improvements in low bass if you fit five times as much smoothing. I cannot say if this will degrade the amps ability to play mids or treble well/very well. |

Yes the PSU is oversized and the resistors etc in use are roughly double the power rateing of the original design...for in my view thermal stability... you can swap to higher capacitance without a problem, as the diameter provided is 35mm, and there is enough copper to allow you to drill holes and stall stud mound caps too.
even if I used 1 transformer I would use 2 PSU boards to "isolate" the channels from each other's power demands...
If you have a strong bass passage in the left channel, it would also affect the right the right channel connected to the same PSU.
I have to go pick up a few things quickly from the shops then I will post the schematic, as Andrew is handy to have around.
The PSU as is, is good too, I am useing one right now, with rather cheap caps, (-+$2).
Andrew, remember that each channel also has up to half a farad of capacitance on the amp PCB itself, depending on capacitor selection, and if you choose to use the regulated version or the slightly more powerfull non-reged version.
I left the PCB layouts for the smaller original version on the construction pages...
I do a small change on the site every day or two, adding missed spots, and expanding info, correcting mistakes etc...
The Liquid silk guy just dropped off a bunch of nice images of the cables etc. I will upload some and add the digital interconnect cables later today... they are quite a bit cheaper than their analog friends... don't ask, I'm just the distributor. |

Nordic,
just want to confirm that the pitch for the large filter caps is 7.5mm and 10mm will not fit.

| pitch for large filter caps is 10mm, there is 5mm pitch between those holes for optional film bypass caps that can be soldered to the bottom. |

I just placed my order for a set of Amp and PSU PCBs with the resistor and transistor sets. I'm looking forward to getting this amp together.
Out of curiosity, has anyone here made a comparison of the Destroyer (the original or the new version) against any of the Aleph amps? |
