This amusing advertisement in a 1974 issue of ETI caught my eye (for obvious reasons), so I had to scan it.
OK, it’s a tad risque, but hopefully the moderators here aren’t too prudish.
What ever happened to four channel.......errr sound.... anyway?? :)

I believe you will invoke the wrath of the moderators who will probably delete this thread and send you to the sin-bin for a few days.
This forum is US based and for various reasons that I will not go into lest I, too, invoke the wrath of the moderators, the majority of people are prudes who do not take kindly to their children logging into an audio forum and finding bared female breasts displayed with wanton abandon.
If your ad depicted a violent crime it would be acceptable, apparently, because some portions of the manual are taken more seriously (literally?) than others. Go figure!

Given the majority of nudist camps being family oriented, I can't see this as being fact. |

I don't think the majority of Americans are nudists though. :D
As a whole, though, I don’t think that the average American is as prudish and puritanical as many in the more ‘liberal’ parts of the western world perceive them to be. They just have a rather largish, far right minority with a strong political influence.
But isn't all this deviating a bit from the scintillating(?) topic of risque 70's HiFi gear adds?
I've come across a few Ampex add's and one for an upstart mob called 'Fearless Audio' (I think their add probably finished them though) in my old ETI collections which probably would be worth a scan too.......
Cheers,
Glen |

Prudery has nothing to do with it as anyone who knows me will attest. But the realities of many cultures (not just the US! This is a world-wide forum- can you imagine some poor Iranian audiophile getting hauled off to jail for looking at pictures of naked women?) and our desire to keep a quasi-professional environment mean that we just can't allow certain sorts of pictures.
Nice hoots, though. |

Yikes! The controversy is growing.
It really was only a low quality, grainy black and white advert from an electronics magazine, featuring a pair of uncovered breasts.
I almost photoshopped the potentially controversial bit’s out with black squares before posting it. Perhaps that would have made it acceptable? :D

Perhaps for an uptight, puritanical, fundamentalist religious "public," but that's not a public I believe should be acquiesced to.
I mean come on, it's just plain silly. Women wearing skimpy bikinis can be found not only on broadcast television on a routine basis, but in the actual "public" as well, leaving virtually nothing left to the imagination as to female anatomy.
But if a goddamn NIPPLE should happen to peek out, OH MY GOD! QUICK! COVER THE CHILDREN'S EYES!
Oh dear. I notice the nanny filter here allows the word "nipple." Some innocent child might read it and start wondering what a nipple is. This could lead to their parents being asked some very awkward questions.
Really, it's beyond silly.

Yeah. Somehow it's ok to show bare breasts as long as they belong to African natives, or dramatic depictions of African natives (i.e. the miniseries Roots). It's also ok to show African wildlife humping like there's no tomorrow.
But show the bare breasts of a non-African native and well... like I said, it's beyond silly. But you can't reason with the irrational.

Yeah, that’s the double standard I had in mind.
There’s a rather disgusting foundation of racism through it too, IMO. Most fixations with nudity stem from religious taboos on sex – and female sexuality in particular. But with regards to her sexuality, the native woman is considered less human (or more of an animal), so therefore inoffensive unclad.

Exactly!
Another example of the hypocrisy here in the US.
On broadcast television, you can't swing a dead cat without running into a commercial for boner pills or "male enhancement" pills and creams. Yet condom commercials are still taboo. You only see condom commercials on cable channels like MTV.

Sorry, I can't buy that argument. DiyAudio is about audio. The subject of the thread is funny ads for audio gear, and what he posted was a scan of an ad for audio gear.
If it was a contextual issue, then why was only the pic deleted leaving a post which is pretty worthless without the pic?

Actually on AOL years ago (and it may well still be the case) you couldn't use asterisks like that. It was considered "masked vulgarity." In fact, I was once banned on their Newsroom forum for saying literally "the F-word." "The F-word" I was told was also considered "masked vulgarity.

In the US the lunatics are running the asylum.
Show murder, torture, and all other manner of violence, but fer chrissakes, don't show a nipple! If we weren't constantly bombarded by images of violence we might not be willing to go to foreign lands, meet interesting people, and kill them.
I they were to start allowing us to see the occasional nipple we might want to travel to foreign lands, meet interesting people, and "love" them.

Here's another example of this genre...

Shave every day and you'll always look keen" |

Switch the television on a commercial channel almost anywhere, prime time entertainment is usually about death and human suffering. Even browse the bestelling paperbacks in your local bookshop at the so-called literature about people harming other people.
It's sick how such things can be called entertainment when human beauty is considered obscene. I refuse to watch television about death and read those books because I consider it offensive, I won't stop others from doing what they wish and I'll look forward to the day when I can purchase harmless "entertainment" without a plain brown wrapper. :D
Yet I'm willing to accept the censorship of such things to allow people from countries with oppressive governments to participate in the forum without fear. In this world "free and open" communication has to come with compromises if everyone is to be included.
Now let's see some more funny advertisements! |

I_F, I live in the US, and for some reason, I have no trouble finding nipples to look at. A short walk along any beach in California will satisfy even the most dedicated nipple-watcher.
The violence trope is very 1968. As the father of a 6 year old, I can attest that most of the cartoons I grew up with are now only shown in censored versions, with the funniest (i.e., most violent) parts excised. The old Road Runner cartoons are almost unrecognizable, and don't get me started on Droopy. The Three Stooges can't be found on any of the 500 channels available to me. I bought a few dozen of their shorts on DVD and the kid screams with laughter when Curly gets eye-poked or Larry gets his hair ripped out.
True, I can see very violent stuff on HBO (like the Sopranos). But hey, there's nipples there, too. Can't have violence without nipples, it appears. |
