Interest Check: Plitron 300VA 18V Dual Secondary Standard Transformers - Click HERE for Original Thread
twitchie
Hi All,

Seeing as how a very large number of Nelson Pass' designs call for 18V transformers and since Plitron often comes up as highly recommended, I've contacted Plitron and they would be willing to give us a price of $65.85 (+GST federal tax) CAD provided we buy 25+ units. The standard, single-purchase price on this unit is $86.68 (+GST) CAD, so this is a significant price reduction. Please note that ALL customers have to pay GST since Plitron must collect this tax. If this gets too confusing, I'll convert all numbers to what people will need to pay, but I wanted to post comparison numbers consistent with what people see on the Plitron website.

Any shipping charges would be in addition to this, and if I have to ship to multiple locations, the price I have to pay after all taxes is $75.06 CAD (65.85 + GST and PST). This will be the value any shipping and insurance will be based on.

Here is the unit:

http://www.plitron.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=162

There are a few issues to manage however - but I just wanted to check if there was enough interest in this to move forward in trying to work out the shipping and payment details. Anyone interested (seriously interested)?

Here is a list of Nelson Pass designs that I know of that can use this transformer:

Aleph 30
F1
F2
F4

Other designs that can use it:

Chipamps - good for 4 ohm loads (LM1875, 3875, 3886, 4780 etc)
Zen Mod (Choky)'s Babelfish

If you are interested, please post your location and how many you would be interested in.

Here is a currency calculator for rough calculations:

I will sign up for 2 for the time being, destination CA, USA.

PiLTRON are overpriced.

www.Apexjr.com has multiple transformers that fit the bill at much lower prices:

500 VA with dual 20 volt windings $25

600 VA at 30 VCT $30

2000VA dual 14 $45

If nothing else check out AVEL...which are sure to be cheaper than Piltron...
JimT
I would buy 2.

Thanks
Jim
luvdunhill
Would would the possible payment and shipping methods include (i.e. PayPal, money order, etc)? Do you have a ballpark for shipping and any related fees would be to the US? I'm interested in two, but would like to know a few more specifics.
h_a
Just as a side note: this trafo is also usable for the F3 (aka Zen#9), since one can wire the secondaries in series to obtain 1x 36V which gives ~51V - just nice for the F3.

I can also imagine very well that Nelson did the very same, a regular part reuser he is. Only downside is that the channels don't get their individual secondaries, but this might be no issue for a class a amp (as the F3 is).

Cheers, Hannes

This is for Piltron only if you think other transformers are better or worse please post it in an other forum or see the F4 forum there was some fuzz about torroids.

And for the piltrons what will shipment cost to ship them oversea ?? if it's not that expensive i will go for 2
twitchie
For cases of International shipping, here is the Canada Post rates - each transformer weighs 2.9kg, plus packaging, so approximately 6-6.5kg for 2 transformers (this is for approximate shipping)

http://www.canadapost.ca/personal/t...r-e.asp#1414504

Shipping is based on country, so here is a listing of country and country codes - for international parcel (ground) the listing is a 4XX

http://canadapost.ca/tools/pg/manua...-e.asp?letter=A

ie - Denmark is a 403 - 7kg and under to Denmark is $63 CAD
twitchie
Just for comparison, I bought a 400VA Antek from ebay earlier this year - the auction was BIN for $42USD, shipping ended up being $26USD and then I got another $20CAD tacked on for a grand total of almost $100 CAD by the time it got to me.

Given the opportunity to trade this 400VA Antek for a same voltage 300VA Plitron, I would take the offer in an instant. Not knocking the Antek, just think that I could have gotten a Plitron for less money.

I know this will be the opposite scenario for those in the US, since you can get $10 flat rate box shipping, but for those of you who want Plitrons, this is a good opportunity at a dramatically reduced price.
twitchie
Here are the Expedited Parcel rates for the US:

http://www.canadapost.com/personal/...a-e.asp#1409979

Here are the location codes for the US - different prices depending on where you are:

http://www.canadapost.com/personal/...a-e.asp#1409795

For a 7kg package, it's as low as $20.90 CAD and as high as $31.35 depending on where you are.

Origin Zone is a 'B' for Ontario, so to:

Florida it would be a '5' - $29.85 CAD
California it would be a '7' - $31.35 CAD
New York is close and would be a '1' - $20.90 CAD
hc167
I am interested and I would like to have one too. but, is the mounting hardware included?
twitchie
The transformers are potted (epoxy), but no mounting hardware is included - you can just use a nut and long-enough bolt
hc167
OK, count me in. I like to get one. I am in Massachusetts USA with zip 02026.

I might order 2 also, what would the total be for 2 of these with shipping to vancouver island ?

One is for me, the other is for another member on here.

Sign me up for three. The Alep 30 requires two of these right? I recall PD recommending 500va somewhere.

Hi Jason, shipping from Toronto to Vancouver area is $16.95 for regular parcel and 41.85 for Xpedited Parcel (rate code 31). This is assuming you're in the V4-V7 postal code, but until things are finalized, I'm not going to calculate final postage, so don't quote me on these numbers (yet)

Thank's for the info, i'm looking to purchase 2 :)
tommak
I called the 800 number for Plitron and the guy I talked to said that no tax was added for sales to the USA. As also shown on the attached picture from their web page.

Is it possible to order the 25+ units and have some shipped directly to the USA without the additional tax?

I don't mean to cause any problems, just checking into possibilities which might create more interest.

Tom
twitchie
Hi Tom,

No problem with your post at all, the information is welcome.

Actually, I had already discussed this with Plitron and they have agreed to do a single large shipment to the US as part of this order. I didn't announce this yet because so far, there hasn't been enough interest from anywhere in particular to make it worthwhile.

I was planning on having the US recipient take care of all US orders via USPS (or is it UPS) $10 dollar flat-rate box to the rest of the US members.
luvdunhill
I could handle things from the US if need be. I know at least h_a (a member here) could vouch for me, as I recently collected a bunch of things for him.

USPS flat-rate would be an excellent way to save some money on the US side.
twitchie
I guess I should reiterate - this Group Buy is only supported by Plitron with regards to price for diyaudio members. They are not going to be handling payment, nor will they ship to all recipients.

So far here is the list of people who have shown interest (I) or potential (P) interest

(2) Twitchie(I) - Canada
(2) pchw(I) - USA
(2) JimT(I) - Canada
(2) Jaac(P) - Netherlands? (looking at the flag)
(1) hc167(I) - USA
(2) rdk845(I) - USA
(1) KT(I) - USA
(2) luvdunhill(I) - USA
(3) jinkslynx(I) - Norway? (looking at the flag)
(2) Dennis Hui(I) - Canada
(2) jleaman(I) - Canada

That puts us potentially at 21 so far.

BWRX
Hi twitchie. I could also be interested in a couple transformers. Plitron makes some of the best power transformers out there and prices aren't about to go down anytime soon. What is the next quantity for another price break? I think we could probably get 50 easy with the VA rating and secondary voltage chosen. I would have no problem being a US distributor for this since there are quite a number of folks in the US that are interested. That would cut down a bit on cost since you could send one big package over the border. That sucker will sure be heavy though!

EDIT: I didn't see that luvdunhill volunteered before me! If he does not want to do it I would be fine doing it as well.
greyhorse
Count me in for 2 as well twitchie. This sounds like a great way to get started on a pair of balanced mono F4s.

I'd be interested in two of the dual 18 v secondary transformers... let me know if this works- Thanks in advance-

Hey Twitchie--

I don't want to be a party pooper, but maybe 300VA is a bit small???--at least if you are using it for stereo amp.

I just rebuilt a mini-aleph (stereo) with a 250VA avel, and I have a lot of mechanical buzz (well, not really a lot, but it is audible). and -- The bias current is only 1 amp per output device.

Maybe it might be worth the few extra bucks for a 400VA??

Just my 2 cents, whatever route you go, lets hope for no noise!!

JJ
twitchie
JupiterJune - I looked at the larger transformer as well, but it would then become a custom order since 18V is not a standard offering for their 400VA units. The price jump to 400VA over 300VA is also quite significant, but the biggest peace of mind for using the 300VA comes from Nelson Pass himself in the F4 thread:

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/show...719#post1181719

quote

"I use a 300 VA. This would be a continuous VA rating, and
you see various ratings for continuous vs short term and of course
this has to be taken with ambient temperature, frequency, and
power factor. When in doubt, Plitron."

Nelson Pass

BWRX - Your offer is appreciated as well. I will need to talk to luvdunhill to see where he's located, but you being in Pennsylvania may make it cheaper (for everyone) to ship to you. I'll have to check with Plitron on their shipping rate as well.

I never thought we would approach the 50 unit mark, but I'll see if we can get the same discount applied.

JJ

Are you sure your amplifier and transformer are working correctly?
A 250VA transformer should be more than enough for an Aleph-Mini. I built mine using a 160VA C-core, and had no issues with mechanical hum/buzz.
twitchie
I've received a reply from Plitron - no additional discount if we hit the 50 unit mark, so I'd like to close off this group buy next week and begin the process of finalizing numbers. I'll have to look into what the paypal fees are on the collecting end, so please be aware that this will be added to final costs.

US Shipments:

Shipping to the US will be sent from Plitron to a US member via UPS (brokerage and shipping will apply to the whole shipment). Shipping from there will be via USPS Priority Mail flat rate box (can someone tell me how big the flat rate box is?). Plitron will not charge any taxes on top of the US orders and all US members will split the 1-time UPS brokerage fee evenly per unit. Approximate US costs will be:

$63 USD per unit
$8-10 USD for UPS postage and brokerage to US per unit
$10 USD for USPS flat rate box (per shipment provided it will fit in the flat rate box)

Canadian and European Shipments:

I will be picking up the units from Plitron, so no additional shipping charges will apply - members in the GTA can meet me for pick. Shipping will be actual Canada Post regular parcel costs using the calculators in my previous posts. Not including shipping (and any customs for outside of Canada), approximate costs will be:

$65.85 CAD per unit
$9.22 GST and PST per unit

Here are some additional details on how we'll proceed:

Possibly (hopefully) I have problems that are causing the mechanical buzz. I will postt anything I find out in the "mini aleph rebuild" thread I started.

thanks for the tips, and sorry for the OT...

PS- Jase--I used .66 ohm resistors in line with the output fets to drop bias current to 1 amp.

from the USPS website:

• Domestic Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes are available to anywhere in the U.S. for $8.95.

• The inside dimensions for the two boxes available are 11" x 8.5" x 5.5" and 13.625" x 11.875" x 3.375".

• The contents of the flat rate box must be neatly contained inside of the box with adhesive packaging tape.

• The box must close securely and retain its shape when taped with adhesive.

• The shape of the box may not be changed or enlarged to fit its contents.

We may decide to add tracking information to the above prices, so I think the $10 estimate is reasonable. If the US broker cannot obtain enough boxes at their local branch office, they are readily available via the USPS website.
BWRX
The flat rate box should probably be the 11x8.5x5.5 option and up to three transformers (that will be very close to the 20lb limit including filler material) can be shipped that way.

Ive noticed i have a little hum too, from the transformer, i did replace this hum by using a piece of wood and a plastic piece of plexie glass to hold the transformer down.

I am running 4 of these, one other thing i have done was put a mains filter on the ac input along with 2 thermistors.

BNK
Is it still possible to join the group buy?
twitchie
It's not too late to join still - once we get final pricing on our order next week, I'll be able to determine final prices and will probably close off the GB then.

Right now, semi-rough calculations is putting the price around $80CAD for US members (per transformer and then another $10 for the flat-rate shipping to them - at most 2 or possibly 3 will fit in the flat rate box - another item that needs to be determined)

Canadian and ROW (rest of world) members will be paying around $76CAD + paypal fees (if applicable) per unit + shipping.

I posted the shipping calculator here - I may have forgotten to add insurance.

Thanks again for everybody's patience - I just received a reply this morning from Plitron with shipping quotes.

I should have final numbers available today and will start collecting payments.

Thanks for everyone's patience in this - I think we've got things organized well enough now to start accepting payments.

BWRX is going to contact the US members and will be organizing things from the US side of things - thanks very much for agreeing to all the work (work already done and the work coming still) in handling things on the US side.

For the confirmed members, I've forwarded your contact information to BWRX and he should be in touch with you to collect payment and shipping information.

I've started contacting some of the non-US members for details and will start collecting the same payment and shipping information tonight.

I'm trying to confirm with Plitron on how long it will take to make our order and will post an update when I hear back from them on that.

Stephen
BWRX
First off, we all owe Stephen (twitchie) a big thanks for initiating and doing the majority of the work for this group buy. Thanks twitchie!

Now, listen up US members. Here is the equation that will be used to calculate the total cost for your order:

($66.12*QTY+$10)*1.03

$66.12 is the cost per transformer
QTY is how many you ordered
$10 is for flat rate shipping and packaging
3% of the total cost is added on for Paypal fees

If you ordered 1 transformer your total will be $78.40.

If you ordered 2 transformers your total will be $146.51.

I will send out emails to each of you tonight asking for your paypal address and shipping information. Once I receive your reply I will send you a Paypal invoice. When I receive payment I will send you an email to let you know it was received. Then we wait... I'll post here when the shipment arrives and will begin shipping them out ASAP.

As far as timing goes, twitchie contacted Plitron and they said to expect a 4 week lead time (plus shipping from Canada for the US folks) from the time of payment.
twitchie
I've contacted all the non-US participants and have payments coming from 2 local members and have received payments from all others except 1 member, whom I will email as soon as yahoo comes back up (it's down right now) :smash:

I thank you for your hard work, i was once here in this position too :) Can you please package mine extra ?

Hi Jase,

Plitron is going to package them singly (meaning BWRX may have to repackage alot of them into USPS boxes - so let's all be extra kind and nice to him).

I'll see how good the Plitron packaging is (it should be excellent, since that's how they send theirs out) and I'll box up the ones I'm shipping out if I can find boxes that will do the job and doesn't negatively affect the shipping charges. I'll try, but can't promise anything at the moment.

I have paid the remainder of the order today and we will keep everyone notified of the status of the manufacturing.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this group buy and a very big thanks to BWRX for handling the US side of things.

Stephen

Just wanted to let people know that they haven't been forgotten - it'll probably be another week or 2 before the transformers are ready.

Thanks for everyone's patience.

Hi Folks,

The long-awaited day has arrived and I've got the Non-US transformers in my trunk now. It'll take a few days for me to get these repackaged and shipped out, so everyone's patience is greatly appreciated.

For those members who were planning on picking up their orders, please contact me via the email link below (profile) to make meeting arrangements.

Thanks,

Stephen

P.S. Brian will be posting his own update on the US orders

The transformers (not the ones that turn into automobiles) have arrived! I will package them up this weekend and begin shipping them out Tuesday the 4th because Monday is Labor Day.

All transformers are boxed up and waiting to be taken to the post office. I'll try to get all of them to the post office in one go, but I may have to split it up over Tues and Wed since I will be dropping them off over my lunch break. They may not appreciate having to handle all of the packages at once either :)
BWRX
All transformers are in the mail (except for the one member who told me to hold them).
JimT
Got mine today. Thanks Stephen!!

Thanks, Brian. Let's see how long will it take for the Plitron to travel across the country via USPS
BWRX
You might be pleasantly surprised. I've had priority mail packages reach the far side of Oregon in 3 days before! Usually it takes more like 5-7 days to go cross country though.
