Songs that make one cringe. - Click HERE for Original Thread
G.Kleinschmidt
OK, here’s a new topic – moronic songs that one can’t stand to listen to.
These three get my vote as the most irritatingly stupid songs ever written:

If God was one of us – Joan Osbourne (daaarrrrr darrrr........darrrrr darrrrr)
Afternoon Delight - Starland Vocal Band (“Sky rockets in flight” “WTF?)
Ironic - Alanis Morissette ("Isn't it Irr....."....Urgghh, NO!.....buy a dictionary dummy......)

U2... anything by U2 makes me cringe.

I think U2 is directly responsible 4 the internet language we C everyday 2.

Don't U think?

Bas, your list is growing:bigeyes:

Yes, after I saw your post I wanted to add U2 ;) as well. They get the prize for most pretentious band also.

Now, now, Bas.... can you really tell me that you haven't watched one of her video clips?

I never cared for any of her music either but those videos are just amazing.
Nordic
I would swap you Norah for Roxette...

Also the early U2 stuff was not bad, like the stuff they released around the time they did This monkey's going to heaven, and Sunday bloody Sunday...
ssmith
Being slightly uncharitable here, but:

We Are the World - USA For Africa (read the lyrics and cringe)
Do They Know It's Christmas? - Band Aid (an apt name)
Ferry across the Mersey.... :violin:

and most other "charity" records.

Nothing more sickening that luvvies trying to be sincere. Yuck.

That was the Pixies, methinks.
Do agree though that U2 were OK up to about 1983.

Yes...stunning I have to admit...:D

They lost the plot after the Joshua tree.

Ah yes..they were SOOO popular in South Africa when I lived there..it was hard not to hate them!

Norah is not really bad...but I grow tired very quickly of her monotonous voice.

ok, when i go to a party and the DJ plays sandstorm, cascada, pendulum (any drum n bass), neophyte, or two step trancey headbangers like skazi, i just want to kill myself due to overwhelming cheesiness. Also i hate bob dylan- his voice ****es me off even if the lyrics and instrumentals are meaningful. Paul oakenfold shoulda retired long ago. Then theres the whiney screaming rock kids are into today... thats my 8
SY
Anything by the Eagles, U2, or post-Police Sting. Anything machine-made (e.g., nearly all techno).
kelticwizard
Here's my top three:

1. Hey Hey Paula by Paul and Paula. This countryish song was number one in New York City for two or three awful months back in the real early sixties. Still can't believe it-New York went for this hokum? For those inclined to check out the song to see what was so bad, try imagining listening to it thousands of times over three months.

2. Copacabana by Barry Manilow. "Nuff said.

3. Girls Nite Out by Tyler Collins. The background had a chorus of female voices purposely singing "Night Night Night out, night night night out" to sound like "nyaah nyaah nyaah". Like these were third graders in the schoolyard. The video consisted of the singer doing a strip show.
Nordic
Lol yes you are right, it was the Pixies... somehow I was transfixed in a moment almost 20 years ago, with school friends listening to both... I think U2 was playing and one of my friends haad the Pixies album in his hands... lol and I ironicaly know pixies music very well.. (bit of a Frank Black fan).

I actualy enjoy good machine made music too... not danceing stuff (one needs a temporary chemical adjustment to enjoy that), but mood music like Autechre... and Plaid.

Achy Breaky Heart, Macarena, Don't Worry - Be Happy, who let the dogs out, Mambo No. 5, ymca.

We built this city by Starship needs mentioning again.

"Oh Mickey, you're so fine/You're so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey hey hey hey Mickey"

Have that stuck in your head for a few days.

1. Warren Zevon - talk about pretentious

2. The Band - most of it just isn't music

3. The Grateful Dead - their music + their fans = zero

4. The Rolling Stones from Some Girls onward - Mick's just trying too hard

ANYTHING by James Blunt. Why? Just listen to any of his songs (esp. You're Beautiful, Goodbye My Lover) and you'll see.

Good head-banging stuff (and I mean on the wall, not heavy metal).
MJL21193
"Come on Eileen" - Dexys Midnight Runners. I had to endure hearing that at least 20 times a day when It was a big hit in my much younger days.

I'm feeling very generous tonight, therefore I'll share it for those unfortunate enough to have missed it:

I hate having to go to a supermarket during Christmas time and enduring all those barfy Christmas carols ad nauseum while I am trying to think what to buy. And the shop staff that might be wearing read & white hats or reindeer antlers. Thank goodness I don't live in part of the world where people turn up on your doorstep singing Christmas carols and acting sickeningly "nice". The very same people that hypocritically, every other day of the year, pursue their selfish, immoral and materialistic way of life.

AmpKiller66
1. Anything made by Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, AFI... Nothing but a bunch of overpaid pretty boys with little to no musical talent whining about their love-life to misguided teens.

2. All so-called "gangsta-rap". This genre is possibly the most foul and degrading abomination ever to slither out of the cesspool of musical waste.

3. All bubblegum pop, such as Brittany Spears, Hillary Duff, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilara, etc.
TerryO
Without a doubt: Your Cheatin' Heart by Hank Williams Jr (I think).

I was stationed at Mt. Home AFB, Idaho in the mid 60's and it seemed they played ("back by Popular Request") that song 30+ times a day. Problem was that it was the only station my radio would pick up.

Still makes me crazy when I hear it, although the Good News is that my favorite station plays only Classical, so I'm generally protected;)

Best Regards,

Also anything with singers who believe they can but in reality......

eg Dire Straits
Raoul
Anything by Greenday, American Idiot onward. Guess you have to pile on the eyeliner and start cranking out unexciting music to win a Grammy.

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton. I will slit my wrists if I have to listen to this song one more time. And while I'm at it, add Wonderful Tonight to my list.

...and add another check to the anti-U2, Eagles, and Sting side of the ledger.
SY
R, you da man.

My swipe at Phil Collins- for his Live Earth gig, his band is using a 10 megawatt stage lighting system. We don't mention the star-toting Gulfstream G4s crowding the airspace, after all, they pay indulgences, errrr, carbon credits. I don't know what these guys are going to play, but I'm cringing already.
Nordic
With these TV shows where they try to find new members for the rockbands , I always congratulate the guys who use Killers' songs... good music, done with shoddy voice... easy to do better than originals!!!!!

But if you realy want to irritate me, how about some Josh Groban, or however you spell it... or that other manchild crooner, whose name slips me now... Think its Micheal something...
Raoul
Yeah, the Live Earth concert is killing me. That's the second time the Gores have used music to pursue political ambition. I noticed Dee Snyder wasn't invited this time around, though

I would like to add the entire Dave Matthews Band catalog to my cringy song list. Also the Beastie Boys' album, To the 5 Boroughs, in its entirety.
Bas Horneman

This guy makes Billy Ray Cyrus look cool.
radtech
So many to choose from.... how about Coldplay - Yellow. What is it with all the whiny voiced singers these days?

And I saw Dave Matthews mentioned.. to me his singing sounds like a donkey braying.

I agree with the Clapton songs Raoul said, and would add his remake of Layla, he should've been garrotted with his own D string for that one.
OzMikeH
I still have Agadoo stuck in my head. I know it's the topic but some things still should never be mentioned.

Popcorn was sort of historic though. The art was not so much in the music but the fact they made their own instruments, formed a band, were world famous and still were geeks.

Anything by Mariah Carey - Pick a note, any note and hold it for more than 3 milliseconds.

Anything new from Cher - any more digital tweaking and she'll sound like Stephen Hawking.
Glowbug
Cheap Trick - I Want You To Want Me...a musical version of a mosquito buzzing in your ear.

Gym Class Heroes - Cupid's Chokehold...mostly because of an ex, after hearing it as a ringtone I'm forever annoyed by it.

Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight...*yawn*

And as much as I love Dylan's music (with my avatar and signature, c'mon :)), he really should have left his harmonica home for the Live @ Royal Albert Hall shows. It's a gorgeous take of 'Desolation Row', until he starts playing that :whazzat:

Tempted by squeeze

uggggghhh! It just does not get much worse.

It did get worse -- when Burger King used it for a Whopper ad and starting hammering away with it during every commercial break. I hate a lot of songs because of that Burger King campaign.

That song always reminds me of Cake, who makes me cringe. Which Cake song, you ask? Pick one, they all sound the same.

What drives me crazy is "comeback tours". Why are people so eager to see old musicians annihilate their own earlier works? The next time I see Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman on TV playing at some live Canadian event (once a month?) I will toss something through the screen. John Fogerty's "The Old Man Down the Road" guaranteed that I would never purchase anything by CCR.

Crikey! Thanks for the earworm, buster. That guy's voice had the charm of termite-rotted wood.

Other singers on my do-not-play list:

1) Bob Seger. The whole of "Night Moves" sounds like he's trying to squeeze out a large loaf -- and failing.
2) John Cougar Mellencamp. All the sincerity of a K-Tel Midnight Collection peddler. Mountain lions should sue for defamation.
3) John Cafferty And The Beaver Brown Band. Apart from the hideous band name, designed for StupidFratBoy appeal, the guy sounds like a barking seal. Ork ork ork ork. Terrible stuff.
4) ANYBODY using the word "baby" in a song referring to humans more than two years old. Usually going "baby baby baby baby baby babyyyyyy, squeeze my lemon til the juice"... I can't go on. Freakin' pedo wannabes.
5) The worst offender of the above, Robert Plant. Half the time he wants to be a hobbit and the other half a Viking raider. Poncy poser all day, every day.

Back a long, long time ago--back in the 1960's, as best I can recall. a frat house at a large University (Texas A&M comes to mind, but it's been just too long to be sure), created a fund raiser with the sort of music mentioned here.
For a small admission price ($.50-1.00) thousands of bug-eyed college folks watched the "fitting demise" of a couple hundred of the worst 45s of the decade. An old jukebox was filled with the offending music, hoisted by a crane something like 150 feet into into the air, directly above a concrete pad, then cut loose for the gratification of the joyful crowd.
One tune that comes to mind, that was in the mix, was entitled "Billy Don't be a Hero". I think "Leader of the Pack" was another. I suspect most forum readers may be too young to remember either of these gems.

Aargh! That one was awful! It also made me think of another really horrible song, "My Boyfriend's Back". That song is so terrible on so many levels I don't know where to begin.

I've been known to like a little bit of rap and hip hop, although probably not what you're thinking, so I'll leave that debate alone.

Brian Adams - Summer of 69. Put a drunk yob in charge of a pub jukebox with a very sick me trying to sleep upstairs: Summer of 69 six times. Brown Eyed Girl four times. The Wind Cries Mary three times.

I was not happy, particularly as I love Hendrix. But I now cannot hear Summer of 69 without wanting to punch someone.
ArtG
1969 was actually a very, very good year for music! The charts were filled with a wide variety of great music of many types. Noteable exceptions however, included: "Jam Up & Jelly Tight" by Tommy Roe. "In the Year 2525" by Zager and Evans (a medley of all their biggest hits!), and "I'm Livin in Shame" by Dianna Ross & the Supremes (easily their worst offering ever!--A tribute to her relationship with Berry Gordy?)

Bon Jovi (gets a special mention all to himself)

James Blunt (of course)

Kid Rock (oh god)

Britney Spears
Mariah Carey
Cher (i thought she was a man for years)
etc etc

thats my two cents.

In the right environment, I can enjoy just about any type of music. Lil Jon, Vengaboyz, Marilyn Manson, Celine Dion, Cake, .... the list goes on. However, I cannot stand anything from the Smashing Pumpkins. I hate it all. Hate hate hate.

Hmmmm.... music died after the 90's..... been very few good songs since then and I never have liked most of the garbage that passes for music these days. I especialy HATE HATE HATE HATE Averil Lavine with a bloody white hot passion... but I hate Frank Sinatra :yuck: (makes me sick just saying it) and ALL other music of the same genre So bad it make averil look like heaven... Frank sinatra :dead: makes me want to destroy anything that it plays on.... That is THE MOST ANNOYING s*** to ever come out of a speaker or radio transmitter. ALL of todays so called "TOP-40" makes me cringe... TOP-40... HAHAHAHA what a joke! should be the "TRASH-40"

LOL

90's Alt. rock is the best... lots of good stuff there, 80's rap was really good, MC hammer sucked, and vanilla ice, dont even get me started, only thing "Ice ice baby" is good for is testing subwoofer excursion, then blowing it up to put it out of its misery for playing that trash to begin with.

The 60's and 70's had some of the best music ever IMO, yes Im a hippie, may not be an old hippie, but I live by hippie standards. NO I DONT LIKE DISCO! Disco make me cringe.. YMCA comes to mind :yuck: kill me now as its playing on the d@mn radio as im typing!

Not to mention cars with so much loud obnoxios DISTORTED bass that youd think the subwoofers were actually propelling the car down the road... I like my bass, but not distorted, and not so much there is no midrange or treble. Sometimes i actually hear some good music on those stereos, but its distorted and ruined by too much bass boost. All I ever needed was a 8" sub and 50 watts.... not 20Kw and 50 18" monsters and not to mention, broken windows. I like my sound as true to the original as possible.

enough ranting for now... I just can beleve how music has gone to the sewer so bad in just 10 years! wow.. it blows my mind. Thanks American Idol for ruining something that was once good.

there is some good new music out there, its just not easy to find, and not played on any mainstream radio stations.

How about anything from Macy Gray... gut wrenching... in a bad way, lol

But there are some bands on this list that I do like, or at least I like some of their songs. I typically do not blanket a whole band as bad or good (With the exception of Macy Gray); for example I like some songs (but not all) by the Eagles.

I do like some techno, or "House" music, such as DJ Tiesto, but I hate most of the Happy hardcore junk... no bueno

How about that super fast, heavy, death-metal stuff??? thats insane! I really dislike that stuff... However, there is no song or band that I know of in particular to point out that makes me cringe

I think Yoko does count, she did try to make music, it just was'nt listenable.
