I think they look nice.

Is the base a cutting board?

How does it all sound?

Yes the base is a wooden cutting board from Wallmart. $2.99 apiece. I`m very suprised by the sound. These Aura 3" drivers have a really nice midrange with astonishing bass when compared to other 3"ers. I put these together as a lark to see what i could build for less than $100. I`d have to say that in a smallish room these do really well. Try a pair and see. They`re only $20 each.

That is clever. Good eye! My wife hates going shopping with me for that reason, always looking at things and coming up with ideas. Lately I have been working on custom tap handles, and it is driving her nuts.

Forgot to note that i`m hosting an audio meet at my place in Sterling Va. [ just outside Washington D.C] this weekend on June 10th. Email or post if interested. Fullrange speakers, tubes, coaxials etc. will be there.

Cabinets are pvc composite fenceposts from Lowes with caps glued on with liquid nails and sound deadening foam. Posts are 41" high with the drivers at 7" from the top. I stuffed above the driver with polyfill and used open cell foam behind the drivers. Ports are 8.5" up from the bottom with a diameter of 1.5" and a length of 2.5". I used wooden cutting boards from Wallmart [$2.99] for the bases.
Suprisingly good sound. I`m going to add a pair of Dayton nd20 button tweeters this weekend as the highs are a little rolled off.
Let me know what you think if you try them, Steve.

sounds interesting, since the ready-made cabinets are at Lowes.

Very Nice! A Lowes just opened here a couple of weeks ago, and I saw those and was thinking much the same thing. Our store had both PVC and some other thicker (and more expensive) non-plastic looking material.

I was actually looking for something 5 feet or longer to make zigmahornets. Home Depot and Menards both have some longer stuff in both 4 inch and 5 inch square. I haven't had a chance to compare thickness. I suspect the thicker and more rigid, the better sound.

can anyone run some numbers to see if these has proper cabinet size for the 3" TB here? http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/show...tnumber=264-809

or is this a "blind" trial. (just received 4 drivers...)

The posts I found at Lowes appear to be ~1/4" thick mdf with a pvc veneer, sound like the same thing?

How did this work out?

Those are the right ones. I`ve not installed the tweeters yet as i`ve been working 7 days a week for a while now. I may have time maybe this week. I need to find my l pads . I`ll let you know how it goes.
BTW i have the house to myself next week so if anyone fancies getting together for an informal listen then let me know.
Steve.
