I've been through the threads concerning the Hemp Acoustics FR8 drivers, but I wanted to see if there are any more opinions on these drivers at this point.
I found out my local supplier is selling the FR8 at roughly the price of the FE206 when shipping from the States is considered.
People seem to like hemp drivers but they also seem to have a buzz about them - no doubt due to the giggle factor at times - I wonder if people have any long-term experience with these drivers and how they compare to the Fostex.
The other question I had was about usage: I read the Pass article on current source amps. I was planning on building an active speaker with the FE206 and a current source amp (probably with contouring as well).
Since the FR8 has a relatively high Q, would there be any advantages to using a current source amp with this driver? I know that using a current source amp eliminates thermal compression issues - but is this really an issue with a 95 dB full range? I believe high sensitivity negates some of the thermal issues. And I imagine it would distort badly before thermal issues have any effect - or is that not the case?
Any info would be appreciated. |
