TEAC's $19,000 VPI HR-X1 turntable weighs more than your wife - Click HERE for Original Thread
Nordic

Mmm, look at the old school turntable gone new. The VPI HR-X from TEAC features a belt driven, 50-mm thick acrylic platter which floats on an air suspension system at 33.3 or 45rpm. Packing a pair of 24 pole, 300rpm AC synchronous motors, this pup weighs in at 52.5-kg or 116-pounds. Oh, and It'll set you back ¥2,310,000 or about $19,000 when these go on sale in Japan in mid-June.

I can't quite get what is the connection between Vpi and Teac. Are they the distributors in Japan?
SY
How do you know how much my wife weighs? She won't even tell ME.
Nordic
lol, yeah, thats for a japanese wife I guess...

SY

This is the Japanese marketing campaign, not the North American.

How 'bout "weighs more than your cat"?
SY
I knew I should have married a Japanese girl.
analog_sa
You can still get a heavier turntable.

The Rockport System III Sirius weighed in at 250kg/550lbs. I bench pressed one once

I say, the stands of the VPI would blend in rather nicely in my kitchen.

Stu,
i think i have Riyo Mori's telephone number somewhere here, if you're interested.

I do like the motor sub assembly and concept... seems seperated fom main chassis... and the motors seem realy nice too... want to get better pics of the tonearm assembly too...

SY
Jacco: Only if you've got tranquilizer darts, too. One for her and one for my fearsome wife.

P.S. you can always still get a Japanese wife...

Looks nice, not 20k nice. DIY a better one for 2K.

Kolashnikov automatic,

how long do you reckon would it take you to build one that looks as nice as the VPI ?

(ps : the're likely a flock of less aesthetic minded on this geek parade who have the construction drawings of La Platine Verdier. )

I prefer a Japanese wife over that turntable.
I hardly play records these days....

I realize it's heresy to criticize anything heavy or expensive, but:

Just what are two motors driving a common idler going to do? Those two belts will scrub as one motor fights the other. At least the original VPI had a rationale (I didn't agree with it, but it was a reason).

Four supports instead of three? Less stable.

Looks like a triumph of fashion/design over engineering principles. Doubtless some journo with a background in ignorance will love it to bits.

Only in a perfect world does a four legged table not long to be a three legged table.

How is this TT different to a "normal" VPI HRX, which ONLY cost about $11k ?
jacco vermeulen
The 19k is the listed price in Japan, often makes a difference.
Add some t&b to a basic HRX and you're halfway there.

A real air suspension 4-damper system under a heavy plateau, with cross interlinked pressure equalising, does not need to become a tripled. Haven't yet heard of a commercial version, though.

a heavy fast spinning flywheel turning an acrylic platter mounted to a heavy plinth which is extremely decoupled from both its supports and the motor assembly. Seem like wise design choices to me.

Better torque distribution on the flywheel.
A pulley for each motor on the shaft of the flywheel, with a locking needle bearing for limited slipping, would be a lot nicer.

(needle bearings like that are used in oil pumps of automatic transmissions)

Btw: just flashed to me that this one is listed at the same price level as Clearaudio's 6-legged battleship.

I don't see that? Surely, by their very nature, the synchronous motors produce synchronously pulsed torque?
