Common Ground layout on Eagle - Click HERE for Original Thread
-_nando-_
Hi !!

How do I apply the common ground layout on eagle? I mean, I need to fill the unused pcb areas with cooper, and then I can connect it to the ground.

I already searched here in the forum, but I couldn't find it :(

Best Regards !
Nisbeth
Click the polygon button, enter the name of you ground signal (eg. GND, AGND or something else) and draw the polygon.

Hi,

Exactly! Connect de polygon to exactly the same net name as to what you want you want it to be connected in the polygon set up panel (in this case the gound). Same with Ultiboard and Protel.

B.t.w. I am working with Protel. Does anyone know how to set up different clearances for different polygons in Protel? It appears that there is only one clearance setting for all polygons.

Cheers ;)
Circlotron
Do you mean clearance between different polygons, or clearance around a certain track cutting through a polygon?
Pjotr
It is for drawing around traces and pads.

I am giving Protel a test drive at the moment and working for week now with it at a serious board. Also found a way to ad vertices to polygons when editing them but there appears to be no way to remove vertices

Thank you veeeeeeery much !!! It worked !

And I also have problem with the BUS. I can draw it, but I can't connect it with the wires... My screen is a mess of wires because I can't use the bus :D I'm talking about the schematic editor ;)

Best Regards !!

Nando, do you mean you are seeing lots of little yellow lines?

If so, you need to use the routing tool to change them to traces...

it is the redish line icon just above the / anf T icons... use the tool next to it to "erase" errors (change them back to yellow lines...

when you have a component more or less where it should go, click the ratsnest icon... it will reroute the yellow traces to the closest points matching your schematic....makeing it easier to route them....

He means he wants to use a bus in the schematic editor but can't for some reason. As a result he has connection wires all over the place.

nando, you should be able to place a bus and connect nets to it. Don't try to connect wires to it use the nets tool for connections.

Hi !

Nordic, please take a look at the picture, and you'll see what I meant with bus.

Also,
I have four VDD Pins, I want to bypass them with 100nF caps, and the caps must be place near the pins. I did this on the schematic, but eagle made very different on the board, it tied all VDDs and then it connected the VDDs to the caps paraleled :dead:

Thank you very much!

If you rearrange the caps the way you want them to be placed and then click the "ratsnest-tool" then Eagle should redraw the connections between the parts and let you route the traces the way you want.

If you delete the .brd file and create a new one (by hitting the board button) back-annotation should work again ;)

It didn't work. Any other suggestion?

I already opened a new project, the schematic changes appear on the board as it should be, but I can't change anything on the board, it don't perform the back annotation. What might be wrong?

Another thing, about the Common Ground. I can place the common ground, I draw the poligon around the circuit, and name it GND, then automatically it conects the poligon to GND and fill all areas of the board with the nice ground. But then, ALL the PCB tracks (route) gets mixed with the ground and disappear. How should I proceed to draw the route with more "priority"? I mean, the common gnd must open space to place the routes, and after the pcb track is done, the ground must be around the track, not mixed with.

Thank you so much !

Is there not an option like “pour over same net” which you can switch off and on? If so, set it to off.

It is along time ago I fiddled with Eagle so I am not sure. But this should be the trick.

;)

Hummmmmm I figured out the common GND problem !

You must draw the polygon AFTER draw all the routes, then it "respect" the routes.

But, I still with the back annotation problem. :D

Design
Rules
Routing
Clearance constraint
Add...

and take it from there.

I made a little audio buffer board, and it was perfect, with common ground layout and everything. But as I use the toner transfer method to make my PCBs, the distance between the signal track and the common ground is very little. Is there anyway to increase this distance?

Yes, that was my mistake ! It worked, thankssss !! :D

I'm very happy, I'm already familiarized with Eagle !

When you create the polygon, there are some dragdown boxes, in wich you can set the space left.... just look the top icons change when you select polygon tool... just change isolate and spaceing value to taste...

sorry guys, that is not working with me, I'm using eagle 4.16r2 version.

there is some steps that i have trouble with...

1st - I selected polygon but where do i put the name of route or pin where the polygon can be connected with?? (i didn´t do schematic..just pcb..)

2nd - when I draw the polygon, i draw a rectangle around the board but in the middle it keeps empty, do not fill the unused pcb areas with cooper...

What I'm I doing wrong????

thank you!
Nordic
If you didn't do a schematic it would not know what trace is called GND

The ninth icon from the top, in the first row from the left is the name tool, you click it, then click the trace you want to rename... GND... becasue you want to work manualy... you will need to hunt out all the traces that corresponds with ground and give them the same name, and then give the same name to the polygon....

I.e. it can be much less work doing the schematic first and indicating GND useing GND from the supplies library...
