It is interesting that this has come up....The 1st date that has popped up for the 4th annual Vancouver Island diyFEST is the weekend of July 28 -- the same as UKdiy07. I wonder if the same date is a good idea or whether it could be exploited for global promotion of diy (an austral-asia event on the same weekend would give 3 concurrent diy events spaced 8 hours apart around the world).

Tying the events together using the internet could turn these events into the start of World diyFEST.

The UK event seems more formal with all the presentations & such, if preperation were made ahead of time, these could also be made available to the VI event in close to real time, and provided for general consumption by diyers everywhere.

Might even poke us to come up with a presentation or 2.

Keep in mind the TO is probably the most hectic & frenzied place in Canada. People from TO think Vancouver is laid back (& clean), & people from Victoria think Vancouver is hectic & call it the big smoke.

Sounds like when you make it here, we'll have to give you a valium (or the local natural equivalent) to give you a head start in getting down to speed :)

I saw your moniker in my email and was sure you were coming in to defend Canadian beer :)

July 28th sounds great to me :)

Presentations? You mean we're going to become more than a group that just drinks beer and trades jokes with Terry? :clown:

3 days should be about right for us westcoast Canucks to do what takes the European's 8 hours or so to get done :D

Cheers!

Dave, since you brought it up, I'll leave it to you to split all the Canadian stuff out into its own thread, just to keep things neat.

Dave and all the crew in Northern Cascadia,

I talked to Kevin Haskins this evening and it looks like we can make it early Saturday (I'll probably spend Friday night at Chateau Haskins, it's a pretty hectic drive to Pt. Angeles after work on Fridays). Kevin's got some stuff for "Show and Tell" and I'll try to have a finished project to show to Chris, at least if the shock won't be too much for him. If you think otherwise, let me know and I'll just go with my normal routine and build the whole thing there!

:devilr:

Looking forward to seeing everyone again.

Best Regards,
TerryO
PS: What are we going to use now that Cal's "Pee Tree" fell over?

Good to here you'll be coming & dragging Kevin along with you (i was just talking with a local last night about one of Kevin's amps and i'm sure he'll be thrilled to touch flesh.

As to pee trees, there are still lots left, you'll just need to venture a bit deeper into the forest (and watch out for the killer house cats)

PS: looks like the 4th annual VI diyFEST has started already --- i'll break it off soon.

Vikash has also been kind enuff to do a clone of the UK event's website and i'll post a URL as soon as i've had a chance to make it look like the Pacific Northwest.

This thread started out over here...

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/show...10&pagenumber=1

(I did leave most of the discussion of Canadian beer, the nice weather and the lovely women back there)

VI diyFEST number 4 will be held on Sat July 28 at its usual spot up on the side of Mount Finlayson on the outskirts of Victoria. BC. This is the same day as the fledgling UK diy event and the idea of having some cross-contamination leading to future events held world-wide on the same day has gotten a spark.

http://homepage.mac.com/planet10/fo...one-mtn-map.gif

Events & attendance will likely spill over onto the day before & after as has happened in the previous years. Things typically get rolling between 10-11 in the morning.

There is lots of room to pitch a tent, or throw a sleeping bag on the deck or in the living room. Bed & breakfast can be found fairly close, and it is a lovely 20 minute drive from Victoria where a much larger selection of motels can be found.

We can also arrange to pick up people at the airport or ferry terminal(s).

I will be putting up a little web-site, i don't know if it will get as fancy as Vikash's for the UK event, but who knows.

Do let me know if you plan on attending so i can at least ensure enuff food (you have to bring your own beer, etc, and are welcome to bring your own favorite for the barbie) or if you have any special dietary requirements.

If you are allergic to cats bring your anti-histamine.

This is the link to last years event's thread http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/show...&threadid=81260

This years will be much the same but hopefully we will be even better prepared and i do expect larger attendance.

Hey, I'm thinking of coming this year. How does this thing work? Are some people camping? What's a better idea, flying in and out through Victoria, or travelling through Van and staying with a friend and only coming to the big isle for Sat.? Weren't the ferries outrageously slow on the long weekend last year?
davidallancole
I am going to try to make it out to the coast for this this year. There is not many people in Saskatchewan let a lone ones that build cool amps and speakers.

It works however it works :) This has been a typically very informal event...

The last couple years Scott has at least camped. More people just brought a roll up foamy (or in Cal's case, his own air bed), and crash on the deck (front (covered) or back (uncovered)) or the living room floor... we have an odd one we can dig up as well.

If you can get to the airport (i'm thinking there is still a direct flight from Calgary) or onto the ferry (there is never a problem if you are a foot passenger) we can get you at this end.

As the event draws nearer i'm sure some car-pooling from Vancouver could be happening, with guys from the lower mainland & up from WA state. Car-pooling can be as simple as meeting someone on the ferry...

Hello fellows:
Just a little bump.

I thought I would let you know that I plan on bringing down a new little something for your listening pleasure.
I am not ready to let the cat out yet but I think it will look and sound pretty nice if all goes according to plan. If things go off track, I will bring beer anyway so it really wont matter what it sounds like as long as the beer is cold.

See you in July

Hey Leadbelly, another fellow Calgarian, great to see, PM me and maybe we can travel out together.

I too am also interested in making the trek across B.C. I have never been to Victoria so i am kind of planning a holiday out of the week before or after july 26 (maybe both weeks, who knows). how many people roughly are going to be at this event. I am sort of a newbie to the group, no one is going to make too much fun of my projects, right???? hahaha

Looking forward to it

Sounds good. I already bought my tickets a few weeks ago when the $49 seat sale was on. I'm flying in to Van on Fri. for my annual fill up of first rate sushi, then planning to take the ferry Sat. morning. Now the hard part is motivating myself to finish a new amp to bring :)

I would bring a pair of well behaved medium sized kidlets and my wife . they would be doing there own thing while I be chillin wit da brothers.

Would a fella be able to park a ragged old RV away from activity?
A location where the air is unscented and chemical free?, my wife has multiple sensitivities

Hi Dave:

I'll do my very best to be there (which means that I'll be there!).

I will bring my Sino 300B SET, a new passive Pre with active Phono I built this winter and a new re-boxed CDP (this one based on a Sony DVD transport and with SP/DIF out so we can see how it likes to dance with the beautiful DACs that were on show last year ;)

Should I bring the PAWOs back? A years use and they are better and better so might be interestig for you and Chris to hear them.

See you all on Friday evening.

PS: anyone who needs a ride down Vancouver Island on Friday and dosen't have to be back home till Sunday afternoon is welcome to ride with me. :D

Hello David. I am most likely coming and going to bring my Pete Millett designed E-Linear amplifier. The only thing holding me back is that I started a new job two weeks ago and must approach the new boss with care. Shouldn't be problem.

I, like many other people involved in this hobby, have little contact with others that build stuff other that through the forums and am looking forward to sharing ideas and listening to some good stuff.

My wife will wander the island in search of pottery.

Cheers,

Out of curiosity, will there be any guitarists coming?
EDDIEMUNSTER
I checked with the boss today and I am definitely coming to the Island.

I am going to bring the E-Linear amplifier but have several other amplifiers and was thinking about what else to bring.

A 12 Watt per channel 12V6 design from Audio Express December 2001 - push pull design with inexpensive tubes - good first or second project.

Dual mono tube amplifier with two K-501 mono blocks (kit) from Antique Electronic Supply (made by S5 Electronics in Arizona - http://www.s5electronics.com/tube11.html). Inexpensive but good sounding first project.

A T-Class air core Charlize amplifier (10 Watts) and a Monica DAC from Diyparadise (http://www.diyparadise.com/shop/).

Please let me know if anyone is interested in hearing any of these and I will bring them along. Dave? Of course if I bring them all I may have to leave my wife behind. Such is life.

Cheers,

Doug

They are small... i'd really like to see Yeo's work. Charlise is on our "reference" D-Amp short-list. And with all the DACs coming out it would be nice to hear another contender. Does Monica have USB in?

These would both be interesting -- 12V6 to compare against the Scott EL84 PP, and the K-501 is probably the best of that class of very low budget starter amps -- it would be nice to suss it out.

Yes, we will be driving out and traveling light because we are staying at B&B's and at a friends place in Vancouver on the way back. More room to stack stuff.

I think Chris' Joida has digital out... if not we'll borrow something from the Hounds (last year we had a Linn CD12 -- i went down to the OB "lounge" and when i got back up it had been relegated to a corner because the crowd prefered the Jolida :))

I kind of forgot about my modified Thorens TD-150 with an Origin live motor and Ortofon MC-3 Turbo (Moving Magnet) cartridge and Rega Tonearm. I tossed out the old base and built a laminated Aspen/Maple one. I will try to fit it in the car. It would be nice to hear some listening impressions.

My beater Rega is also up & running (fresh arm installed on the Sunday of the event last year)

That is the one that both Tim & Ali, and Barry have stayed at. As the crow flys it is just on the other side of the mountain (a couple km)... the drive is a bit more circuitous 910-15 min depending on lights & traffic and how fast you take Millstream)

I agree that Bed and Breakfast prices are a little high. However, this is reasonable compared to some and hotel prices are brutal. There are few under $100.00 especially during high season. Fortunately, we are only spending 3 nights in B&B's and the rest at a friends place in Vancouver. We are looking at buying a motorcycle trailer in the future for the little Toyoto Echo. Call me a wimp but I can't can never get a good nights sleep on an air mattress in a tent.

Geek,
I slept great on that air mattress, I never did thank you for letting me use it (yes, I know that it was Dave's). I actually went and bought one afterwards. It was a combination of the sweet sounds of music, clean air and a clear conscience (thank God for my failing memory :^)

This year I think that I'll do the mattress again and let Kevin Haskins sleep on the rocky ground. After all, he's in his 30's and I don't want him turning over and putting his arm around me in his sleep:D
I think that his wife would agree that this is a good idea.

The only DIY I've delved into is speakers, but I doubt I have anything in the way of innovative. I hope to have an OB w/ RatShack 40-1271 completed by then. I have a bipolar design from last year.

I'm within driving distance (40 minutes to the ferry on the mainland side), so if I bring speakers, I'd transport them myself. My wife and I used to make the trek every year or so, but haven't in the last couple of years (that ferry ride is expensive!).

The 1st event was mostly speakers, but as the event has matured the kind of gear has rounded out. Frugal-phile(tm) builds are always appreciated. There is a specific listening spot where we set up the OBs... The bipoles are 1354s? I'd REALLY like to hear those.

I believe I will be able to attend this year. I'll bring a DIY Contrabass or two, with DCX2496, a Dolby Digital decoder, and a power amp to shake things up a bit.

There's some audio strays I need to find new homes for, which I will briefly list here (apologies if this is inappropriate, but I'm not eager to mail any of these): Thorens TD-165, Kenwood KD-500 (doesn't lock speed, no arm), Dynaco graphic equalizer, Fisher mono tube tuner, No. 19 transceiver (Korean war vintage?), Heath ham receiver (tube), one 30 watt 12" Akai woofer (white cone), Altec 15" that needs reconing, pair Emilar 2" drivers, no diaphragms, pair of heavy 15" scoop bins without drivers, HP distortion analyzer (tube), lighting controller/chaser, Traynor Bassmaster YBA-1 amp with matching cabinet.
jleaman
If i can't make it ill see if i can sent up a pair of my speakers. My new ones are finished, i hope SCD can pick them up for you guy's to listen to.

Jase
dangus
As for taking big speakers on the ferry... one time I strapped a 15 cubic foot dual-18" cabinet onto a mover's dolly along with an Anvil case with the crossover and power amps and they didn't charge me any extra for this. A hand truck would have been easier to roll over the bumps, though.

I might be able to give someone a ride from Nanaimo down to the diyFEST.

I might be able to give someone a ride from Nanaimo down to the diyFEST.

I'm in nanaimo.

Hi Angus,
With regards to your Fisher mono tuner I believe Chrisby might be interested based on discussions we've had in the past.
He's away in Seattle for the weekend but do drop him a email.
Best, Frank

Hi all

I will be coming down from the North end of Vancouver Island on the Friday (27th) afternoon. I expect to pass thru Campbell River about 6:30pm and thru Nanaimo about 8:00pm.

I will need to leave about 2:00 pm on Sunday (29th).

I will be driving a van which I expect to be only half-full of gear, so if anyone is compatible with that schedule and needs a ride for themselves and/or their gear, please email me and we can set it up.

Jess,
Kevin Haskins and I are looking at getting there either Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. I've talked him into bringing that TT (I think) and maybe an amp. Kevin doesn't like to do the commercial stuff at these meets, but I have to say he's a real DIY "gearhead". He does all kinds of stuff just to play around with that has no viability from the onset.
Looking forward to seeing you and the "Gang".
Best Regards,

I just finnished my Pre-Amp, after a few months of working on it slowly. The volume control has a piece of plexie glass behind it that glows a soft blue when the pre-amp is on.

That is really beautiful! I love the proportions and lines and I am dying to see how you pulled off the plexi glow-ring.

OK, things are firming up, could I please get a lift from the ferry Saturday? Anybody who's driving got a spare seat? My schedule's open, so just pick whatever ferry time works out for you.

And, can somebody bring an air pump? I've got the air mattress, but packing my big pump would just be a total hassle. It's gonna be a big enough hassle walking around downtown Van on Friday with a big camping backpack :)

Yes, we'll arrange for someone to pick you up... me or Chris or Jeff or Barry probably -- no it probably won't be me... Barry has been out of touch, but he lives in Sidney so it would be not out of his way. You probably want to plan on the 7 or 8 o'clock ferry -- we'll get out end together and see where we are at....

I will not be able to make it, i have to work at 5am on saturday, however i may be able to get in contact with Jessy and give him my speakers and pre-amp if any one wishes to hear/ see.

And we'll see about a pump... my dad has a plug into the wall one as well as a hand pump -- it is just a matter of interfacing... and worse comes to worse i'm sure we could find enuff hot air to manually inflate it :)

If there's not too big a crowd expected, looks like I can escape family vacation for a day, and make it out Saturday. Ed West down in Bellingham figures he might make it too. Can anyone say road trip?

OMG!
One of you two is bad enough, but both............:D
I don't understand why people like Dick Morgan and Ed West are even allowed at DIY Meets. They're sooo far out of the Audiophile mainstream with their unconventional thinking, that people like myself (that are perfectly centered in that mainstream), sometimes are made to feel...well, uncomfortable. Perhaps, if I read them a few pages out of Stereophile Magazine, it might help. Having heard the revealed Audio Truth, they will abandon their evil ways and return to the flock. It will be necessary that when they have realized the error of their ways, that we get them to the nearest approved Boze Sales Outlet as soon as possible, before they start backsliding and are lost forever.

Best Regards,
TerryO

Terry:

Please don't forget to bring your frock-coat and bible (RCA Receiving-Tube Handbook 4th Ed.).

I, for one, am much comforted that we poor, lost audiosheep have a shepherd who will lead us out of darkness.

We will expect a suitable sermon sunday morning. Maybe something on the topic of appropriate worship for germanium transistors?

Jess

PS: this year you will only be allowed 3 hours instead of 8 to finish aany speakers you bring to the fest! :devilr:

I don't when you're arriving Terry, but one thing I'd like you to do is locate a new peetree. The old one blew down in one of our not so recent wind storms as you know. A truck load of beer will likely result in the need for at least one of us needing a new location.

No toothache medication this time so I don't have to show the level of control I did last time. By the time noon rolls around, even my speakers will sound good. :drink:

And if they don't, we might have to talk. ;)
