I, for one, am much comforted that we poor, lost audiosheep have a shepherd who will lead us out of darkness.

We will expect a suitable sermon sunday morning. Maybe something on the topic of appropriate worship for germanium transistors?

Jess

PS: this year you will only be allowed 3 hours instead of 8 to finish aany speakers you bring to the fest! :devilr:

Jess,
I am fully determined to leave none of you behind to wander aimlessly in the wilderness of Audio Abstractions.
Germanium transistors? Yes, that would certainly be a suitable subject for a sermo..., a lecture.
I might even bring my Soundesign gear for demoing during my power point presentation. The top-mounted Turntable features a SOTA ceramic cartridge, which is seldom seen today.

Concerning time constraints, I recognize none that would come between myself and my art. However, if an axe or a chainsaw is available, I might be able to craft a masterpiece a little quicker. I will bring my own 24 oz. framing hammer and aged nails. I find that the process of slow oxidation lends itself to a mellower sound than galvanized nails which (in the opinion of many) have a brittle, harsh tone and are totally unsuitable for High-end speaker construction.

Best Regards,
TerryO

If you want something special to eat bring it. Bring your own intoxicants (althou if you only want a beer or 2 you'll probably be able to manage to bum that). If you have any special dietary requirements left me know. Jesse is bringing 3 salmons down, and we'll also be doing tacos.

Donations towards nutrients & non-alcoolholic beverages will be acceptable. In an emergency a big grocery store is 10 min down the road (and a beer & wine store a minute closer)

BTW. Barry is going to pick you up at the ferry.

One of you two is bad enough, but both............
I don't understand why people like Dick Morgan and Ed West are even allowed at DIY Meets. They're sooo far out of the Audiophile mainstream with their unconventional thinking, that people like myself (that are perfectly centered in that mainstream), sometimes are made to feel...well, uncomfortable. Perhaps, if I read them a few pages out of Stereophile Magazine, it might help. Having heard the revealed Audio Truth, they will abandon their evil ways and return to the flock. It will be necessary that when they have realized the error of their ways, that we get them to the nearest approved Boze Sales Outlet as soon as possible, before they start backsliding and are lost forever.

Best Regards,
TerryO

Terry, I know that, speaking for myself at least, Edward and I have lost our respective ways, and wandered off on the path less taken. Having got there, I discovered that it lead to the ladies room. Not altogether a bad place to wind up (it was very tidy), but thats another story.

Having resolved to mend my ways, I looked to experience for guidance, and found a role model in the personification of a gray haired dumpster diver from Seattle. The audio gods, my component supply, and my wife willing, I hope to have my latest Terry O inspired creation with us when we arrive at the appointed place at the appointed time. I assure you, that not only will this creation adhere to DIY standards and offend the ears of those gathered, but also the sensibilities.

Cheers,

Dick

Mr. Morgan,

It would seem that I was overly hasty in my characterization. It seems that you have resolved to overcome those flaws that I earlier described. There is a slight correction in the above posting that needs to be addressed. The correct spelling is "Dumpster Divior", which is, being a proper noun, always capitalized. Note that the root word is also related to another word often used in conjunction with dumpsters: devour.
:whazzat:

Looking forward to seeing both of you again.

Thanks Dave. I'll PM you my cell #. I can and will eat anything, hence the username, so I'll just contribute to the pot for food. I'll bring some good stout along myself to drink.

Any special requests for stuff from cowtown? Do you get Wild Rose beer over there?

Bad news is I don't have a single audio project that I wanted to bring done. But there is a chance to knock out a hybrid chipamp in the next couple of weeks, chassis' been ready a while now.

Is anybody driving up from Victoria Saturday morning sometime? I'm leaving the car with my wife, who will drive me if required, but if I could catch a lift that would be great.

Alternately, if nobody is - which would mean I'll be asking my wife to drive me - and someone needs a lift from Victoria, we'd have room for one or two more, depending on how bulky the equipment you're bringing is.

If I manage to finish the Harveys (it's looking about 50-50 at the moment) they'll be on the roofrack, but the trunk will have room for a couple of amps and some camping equipment (e.g., beer).

Regards.

Aengus

[edit] OK, I took the underlining away from "needs' - I just wanted to emphasize that this was an offer as well as a request, but the emphasis didn't read that way. ;)

Bring your Loonies & Dubloons (aka Toonies)

Bob Reimer of Creative Sounds has started the ball rolling by generously donating not 1, but 2 pait of FR125SR for a raffle. We've also scared up some t-Shirts, a pair of 1354 with phase plugs, and Jesse is bringing a pair of outdoor speakers infused with good karma.

I have a 15" eminence coax in a little box -- close as we'll get.

Keep an eye out for leadbelly (Tony Pillo) -- he will likely be on the same ferry... if you don't have passengers you might be able to streamline things by giving him a lift (Barry is currently scheduled to pick him up at this end)

dave
Cal Weldon
I have a feeling the back of the truck might be rather full and the only other seat is the passenger that may be relegated to cargo duty if I wish to keep things dry. This is why I have not made any offer thus far.

If Tony can locate my truck, black 1997 Mazda 2-seater pick-up with a small rusty roof (box) rack and some mysterious looking metal in the back, then we might just swing something. Can you provide contact numbers so that if we hook up, we can cancel other rides?

Tony, if you read this, send me an email and I will give you my cel #

Where are you spending Friday night? How are you getting to the ferry?

EDIT: That's the 7AM from Tsawwassen on Sat morn.

Just got an email from GPA that the drivers are being air-mailed and might, just might be here on time. :xfingers:

Peddle bike?

There is a fairly flat trail, from Sidney to Victoria and then you take the Galloping Goose, then take a right onto Hiway 1, up Thetis lake hill... long but not overly steep, right on Millstream. Flat to Weatern Speedway, then an long cuvfy uphill (up/dpwn/up/up/down/...), left on Finlayson Arm, across the bridge and then that's where i always got off and walked the bike the last 1.5 km.

Or you could hang a right early and go over the mountains (hills)

After you zoom in a bit, the 2005 Colour Ortho layer )clik the layers tab to see the layers)

20m countours with 2 possible routes (max flatness -- red) attached

And fell free to ring us when you get to Millstream (or later) and we'll send a truck down to assist on the last bit.

Only two days until the diyFEST!

Are there any remaining needs? Media, Source, Pre, Amps, etc??? I'll be coming over on the 11 am ferry with Dick Morgan. I think that there is one seat available for a lift from the ferry landing to the event.

I am looking forward to seeing my old friends, and meeting the new ones... See you there!

Sure... there will be my Frugal-phile(tm) Rega II, and Jesse's Unity. I expect Chris to bring his souped Rega 3, and Jeff his LP12.

We'll have Chris's Jolida CD player, and lots of cheap ones, as well as Brent's USB DAC. Another top-flite CD spinner would probably be nice.

Nanook
Dave ,
I'll be there for sure (I'm in Vancouver right now).

I only brought the little T-amp and a mock up of what I hope to be the finished product, and a power supply. Anyone have an iPod to use (I may have a little" treat" to listen to if so). I've got the Hemp FR8Cs or with me, and an old (almost NOS out of a church that haven't been used or were stored and never used) of Altec 409-D fullrangers. Dave, I also brought a single woofer with me, would you be willing to take a quick measurement for me? Brought a couple of cds as vinyl in the car for 1100 kms in the heat, would make for some REALLY bad listening ;)

Haven't decided to take a car across or walk on. any ideas?
Will the missus be up for some company? (My wife's coming too, so maybe shopping/socialising, etc?). Not sure if staying overnight on the island.

Cal , I'm actually in Surrey, if around would it be possible to meet tonight or tomorrow? Any cool haunts for used audio gear and electronic componenets?

Looking forward to Saturday.

Hi Stew,

I would think it's easier if you drove on. Then your wife can escape from all that testosterone.

Old gear? There's none left, Dave scoops it all up when he comes over to the mainland. I have a few things laying around if you like big speakers. Maybe we can arrange something. 604-802-9554.

It occurs to me that many of us going to be on the ferry on Saturday morning for an-hour-and-a-half...

I think others will be going over on earlier Ferries.

Last call for a weather report before I pack:

What's the overnight temp like: should I bring the thick sleeping bag or is a thin sack OK? I don't have true backpacking camping gear, just small sized car camping gear, so every little bit of bulk I can shave off counts :)

Hi Cal,

Dick lives in Delta - 15 minutes drive from the Tsawwassen ferry terminal. I'll be driving up through the Peace Arch border crossing and on to Dick's house on Saturday morning. We'll take his car from there to Dave's - via the 11 am ferry.

Edward
Cal Weldon
Holy cow, you can spell Tsawwassen? I want to meet you. ;)

OK folks, I have the cryo cat 5e wire in hand. Metalman (Terry) came over for a visit, dropped it off and took me through the process so I'll be ready for questions.

Nanook (Stew) and his brother Ken dropped by just after Terry left and we had good shoot the **** time.

Oh, and a couple...:drink:

I don't think I'm coming, after all. An event which was originally Aug 4 changed to the 28th, plus some friends have invited me camping. If anyone is interested in the gear I mentioned previously that needs to find new homes, send me a message.

Anyway, I haven't replaced that burned-out motor in the Contrabass or installed the 5.1 decoder in the panel truck yet.

Did enjoy the BS session with Cal. I'll be on the 7:00 am ferry--I reserved a spot. Looks like I'll be campin in Dave's yard ('cause ya never know if refreshments are served and all)

the treat I thought I'd have was a loaner Vuum, from Atlantia, but they are real stingy with the time that they think a review should take, so I thanked them, but no thanks. See the "Fat Man" review in August TAS.

I will show up Saturday afternoon.

I will bring a couple NOS TDA1543 USB DACs. I have made a few refinements as well as adding ecdesigns reclocker.

One of the DACs has a jumper to switch the reclocker on/off. Let me know if you would like to hear it.

Dave has one of my reclocked DACs, you can also ask him for a listen. Geek has one too, I hope he brought it so I can update it.

there's a couple of Altec 409-8Ds hanging out in a box downstairs. I had intended on puttin the Hemps back in the box, but it seems in the rush to try to get to Victoria for an hour (which was a cluster anyways, we ended going straight to the ferry). Box is 20"X10"X8" (L x W x H), styrofoam and purple tissue paper over the drivers.

Pvt. Olson reporting in as ordered, Sir!

It's 2:25 AM and I just walked in the door, I got on the Sidney/ T-Wassen ferry after watching 3 departures. Those darn Hot Rodders with their reservations really know how to hurt a guy.
Going to bed now, I'll check back tomorrow after some sleep.

I had a great time. Many thanks to Dave and Ruth, the most gracious hosts I've ever encountered.

Best Regards,

Nanook
thanks for the good times.

to Dave (and Ruth): thanks. Apparently my OBs will be having Altecs mouted when I get home..., looking forward to hearing the newly modified Hemps at home. Thanks for the magnets, the food and the hospitality

to Chris: thanks for the speaker enclosures, they "rock" appropriately, and sound particularly rock friendly in my brother's house...now if I can just get him to put the other 2 pairs of speakers elsewhere. Thanks for the link to the "piano" site.

to Scott (scd): thanks for the record clamp and interesting conversation. I'll measure up and sketch out a clamp for my cd player...this could be very interesting, particularly with green flocking. I'm sure somewhere along the line we'll continue the massive vs. passive loudspeaker enclosure approaches.

to TerryO: thanks for the amp board. Another amp I may actually get to put together.

to Kevin: hope all is well on the home front. One of the nicest baby pidgeons I'll most likely meet

to everyone else who I have missed: thanks for the memories and conversations. Angus, Eric, leadbelly, Doug, another Scott, and all those that I can't remember (old-man-itis induced memory loss)

to Laura: thanks for being there, else how would I get back home? So many speakers/amps/Dacs/thrift stores, so little time.

and lastly, Cal: the nicest speaker dork a guy could meet. remember good sounds can come from boxes smaller than the shipping boxes for Selenium drivers:) I'll call if I'm still in town Monday night
Kevin Haskins

Thanks to Dave & Ruth for their hospitality, Cal for his passenger seat, and Scott for out-smiling me, which my friends would say is a rare occurrence.

Nanook wrote:

While I'd like to take credit, actually the boards were made up by Kevin Haskins, who donated them. My sole contribution was just passing them out and trying to ensure that everyone got an amp. In keeping with Kevin's DIY Spirit, all the hard work was done by Kevin and all that's left is to add components, rectifier, a heatsink/case plus transformer ;)

It should make a dandy little 60 watt chipamp for those who want to have an amp to power a bass module complementing their SET amp driven fullrangers.

The board should be the National Reference board. I did it a couple years ago.... could be a couple small differences that you will have to do some head-scratching on.

glad to hear they worked out - it's ever the wrong time to give someone a taste of what the whole FR/SET thing is all about.

it could be time to find another nice home for the Advents (or part-out via e-pay)

as to speaker enclosure design goals - that's a "discussion" for another time - but one does get tired of having to explain or excuse their personal choices - one listen could be worth a thousand (unspoken) words

(isn't it interesting how quiet a group of chattering DIYers can get when the system is 'gellin'?)

Hi,

Surfacing after a good dozen hours of catch-up sleep.

1st i'd like to thank Ruth, without who's help this would not have been possible.. and Chris, & Gregg & Barry & Jeff & Scott who all lent a hand. One of the most impressive diys was Scott & Chris' invented from spare parts hand rail on the new stairs.

2nd i'll apologize in advance for forgetting names... i'm real bad with names. Amazingly some did stick.

The day was a gas, go, go, go... and i was going trong the who;e week before. Attached is the scene in the open baffle "room" 24 hrs before the event (and this after 3 solid days of tidying).

I'd like to thank everyone that came, and special appreciation to the new faces that ventured over from the continent... there were quite a few visitors from Washington State & Alberta.

And the girls + Doug and Aengus who completely releived me from my usual duty in food-preparation.

The event started on Friday with those helping with last minute prep (which in the end included the early arrivers on Sat AM), a BBQ & a listeing session to Fonkens with various incarnations of modded FE127es -- there is definitily more to be had out of this driver.

Saturday was a blur, with 3 "rooms" going at once... one of the rough spots was trying to get a TT that didn't suffer foot-falls in room 3 (the back deck (again it & "room" 1) show that the best way to deal with room acoustics is to remove the room.

Sometime between afternoon & evening a feast of tacos & smoked salmon was devoured (next years event will likely return to near end august just so that we can have freah salmon :))

After the last plate was cleaned (actually Jeff said go ahead don't wait) the raffle draw was held. 2 pair of CSS FR125SRs, a pair of phase plugged RS 40-1354s, 2 pair of outdoor speakers infused with good kharma, and a t-shirt were distributed. Kevin has pictures (and i can remember all but one name). One thing for sure -- it seems we have a lucky couch...

Listening went on into the evening... a bomb scare on the ferry ended up with a few more overnight guests... besides the field of tents on the back 40, the back deck (listening room 3) was litered with blissful sleepers when i awoke (far earlier than normal) Sunday morning... quiet & fresh air seemed to attribute to some very restful sleeps, but i understand that a few may have awoken a bit clouded by the effects of a couple too many beers.

Turkish coffee & pancake breakfast seemed to help there. Following breakfast was the 1st (and last) chicken coop push (a little ricketty shed that never actually saw any chockens)

Listening continued ... the final stregglers leaving to spend a few hours browsing the vendor stalls at the ferry terminals :) by about 2:30.

No bad rooms, lots of wonderful music. Some surprises (ie a Visaton + ribbon hidden behind a Sansui wooden lattice grill), a range of amps, chip-dips of many flavours, a wonderfully done miniA that served duty in "room" 1 for the open baffles (Visaton B200 (with & without plugs (and a demonstration of the plug installtion), Hemp FR8s (which later became Dan Mason's dream hemp -- Dan you need to talk to Stu), and the Korean Sounds of Music 6). Baffle was ~3.5m wide by 1.1 high, with removeable driver subbaffle), various tube amps that served on the back deck, including Doug's excellent implementation of Pete Millet's E-Linear amp, with enuff James transformers to strain your back. The one room that had walls was mostly served by Terry's 4870 chipamp & an array of multi-ways was auditioned there.

At this point i have to say that Terry showed he was not infallible, his 2 way with as many XO compenents as all the other speakers combined showed that they had been rushed a bit, with ill fitting bass & a top end that needed taming being most evident.

I also was left with the feeling that many people left with a new appreciation of what a single full range can accomplish, with the various Fonkens, Frugel-Horns, Mileva, Demetri, PAWO, hemp-bipole Metronomes, Aiko shining (they did have the advantage of "room" 3 & the tube amps. As well the Visaton B200 with phase plugs outdid the 2-way with the Visaton (althou it was at a disadvantage because it was too small a box driven by a chip-amp vrs driven by a miniA on totally impracticle baffles with no room)

Hopefully that gives some framework to hang other comments on, and pictures...

And it was a pleasure to meet all the rest of you. I had a great time; thank you, one and all.

Mind you, I'm still bitter about all those raffle prizes going to the sofa...

Regards.

like you have time to complete another project

thanks for the bottle, I might need some help with the last couple of fingers worth - there's another weekend coming up soon - could you find your way to Gordon Head?

Dave and Ruth deserve a BIG round of applause, they are amazing at hosting these ever-growing events! Their part in fostering the growth of the DIY "community" is not to be underestimated
Thanks, everyone for being there, Kevin for the amps, Scott for the beautiful record clamps, Jesse for the suberb DIY turntable, and on, and on.
Oh, next year, Scott, bring a bigger tiger torch!!:)
Many Thanks again to Dave and Ruth,
Don

The question is rather, can I find my way back after, um, helping ;) - but yes, I'd love to come.

You're probably right about the project, since if the Harveys ever get completed the pieces of chip amp scattered all over my desk are starting to become annoying...

Regards.

If you think the pieces are annoying sitting on the desk, wait 'til you listen to the completed amp on a FE127 :clown:

it's harder than I thought typing while ducking under my desk for cover :D

I should have the template ready in the next day or so - send me a PM

The power just came back on so I can add my 3 cents.

First a big thanks to Dave. Without Dave there would be no Ruth. Ruth is the glue that kept this ship afloat. What a woman. Thanks sweetheart. Dave you are a lucky man.

It started for me on the ferry. I was dying to see why someone would name themselves leadbelly. That became clear at first sight. Tony is a very large and thankfully friendly guy. We got to solve all the worlds audio problems in the short time we had before arriving.

Upon arrival, Dave welcomed us with his famous Turkish coffee. He calls it that but having never been to Turkey, I can't know for sure but I wonder if the turks really do drink that or not. Nice thing is, you just need one as it tends to stick with you between your teeth.

Beer was plentiful and a special thanks to the guy who brought the big cooler for a temporary storage facility.

Speaking of beer, I know a lot of you think that it might influence a decision or two. That was comfirmed Saturday afternoon when I walked down the driveway to find a group of testosterone and beer laden individuals attempting to set a granite slab on fire with a tiger torch. It only took, oh, about a half bottle of propane to discover that rock still doesn't burn. Pure genius there.

As the beer train continued it was particularily nice that Scott had beat up a beaver and stole his prize log for a handrail. Man that came in handy.

Magic sofa? I'll say. During the raffle it became evident something was maybe a wee paranormal. This nice old leather loveseat had some tricks up it's sleeve. Scott was on the left and he won first prize. Tom on the right won second prize. Even through the haze we wondered about the special qualities. Since Scott was allowed only one prize he decided to forfeit his spot. Well like a dirty pair of underwear, I waited for no man to give me permission to take his spot. While we all had a laugh about the lucky couch, I had a chill run down my spine. I won the third raffle prize.

I think the the non-human animals were enjoying themselves as well. The cats were curious and the dog was mans best friend. Between them managed to deliver us a present in the form of a baby rabbit. This was the only sad moment for me. Sad until someone picked it up and air-mailed back into the woods that is. All was good then.

So we said goodbye to a few that had to catch the sat night ferry only to see them return an hour or so later with the ferries shut down due to a bomb threat. That made for a busy back porch at bedtime. That OK, with all them together, the snoring was almost choral.

So after all the "I love you man" stuff, it was time to hit the sack. Flashlights are very helpful out in the woods.

Sunday morning was interesting. After Dave's wonderful spiced banana pancakes and Turkish mud, I guess there was still a little testosterone that hadn't been used up. For some reason, with Dave's blessing, we decided to beat up a chicken coop with levers and ropes. Being on a hill, and us, not being engineers made it an interesting venture. Thankfully we came away with all the fingers and toes but I've never seen Chris be so manly in all my life. I think he's a closet body builder.

Sadly, it was time to go, or was I was told to leave? Stories may differ here.

Although we were listening to a whole bunch of these dinky little speakers all weekend, I found it highly educational. I discovered that with the right mix of ambience and imbibing, those little suckers do OK. I really missed my woofers though and on more than one occasion had to wipe a tear from my eye.

This was far and away the best event of it's type I have been to. The laughter and camaraderie were second to none. It was nice to be able to have fun as well as listen to all the goodies that were brought. The host and hostess were the mostest.

Now, if only I had remembered my camera.

Thanks again to Dave and Ruth and to all the participants that all came together to make it what it was.

And finally to Nanook, A heck of a nice audio dork.

The image pretty much says it all. Your a talented guy Cal.... beer in one hand and torch in the other.

I'm with you though.... we needed at some big horns. Those dinky little girlie drivers just don't cut it, especially outside. Next year I'll fill my pickup truck with some big horns and try making it by Canadian Customs without getting myself thrown in jail.

I can hear the conversation now....

Canadian Customs Officier: Do you have anything to declare?

Kevin: Yes... I like women with big ****.

Canadian Customs Officier: Do you have anything of VALUE to declare?

Kevin: No.

Canadian Customs Officier: What do you have in the back of your truck?

Kevin: Nothing.

Canadian Customs Officier: Can I have a look.

Kevin: No

Canadian Customs Officier: Mr. Haskins... please get out of the vehicle and keep your hands where we can see them.

You get the idea...

Cal;

well, we've got our nerds, our geek(s), dorks, and wannabees (actually, they didn't all make it, did they :devilr: ), who's left ?

On second thought, it's too bad there wasn't any video of team desctructo in operation - I'm pretty sure mrs B hasn't seem me swinging anything with that much gusto for years. (go ahead, insert your diminutive jokes here - after 35yrs with Sue, I think I've heard them all - and yes, it did take at least 15 minutes to recover)

Also too bad the torch wasn't put to better use on Sunday morning on the coup
Cal Weldon
Geez, looking at the guy in the green shirt, it just goes to show the effect of mob mentality. Mind you, I personally didn't waste any of my beer trying to temper that granite.

Fire hazard... besides lots of good winter firewood in there for my dad.

Hmm, we obviously have to try harder. We didn't destroy a single thing at the UK fest. :)

Forgot to mention how nice it was that this was an international event with a good contingent from Washington state as well as Canadians from Alberta. Good on you guys for making it.
SY
Al, that's surprising indeed, given the track record of some of the participants.
Cal Weldon
The only thing we came close to destroying was Kevin's liver. Mmm...barley sandwiches.

Don't worry Al, this was your first one. You'll get better.

Those Canadian beers where pretty filling. I didn't NEED anything to eat after a dozen of those babies.

BTW... all of my pictures after about 6:00 PM are completely gone. Evidently, Minolta didn't do a good usability test with someone as intoxicated as me when designing the user interface.

excellent - no need to bribe you to destroy the evidence of our insanity, vanity and cupidity

I've got a good one here. Can anyone guess the identity of this beer commercial model?

chrisb
well judging by the pleated inseam, fresh manicure, and highly toned abs, I'd guess none other than our good friend Cal

We love ya man, but maybe next time we can conscript the Team Kokanee girls to provide the colour - no on second thought we'd be too distracted to watch our footing, and something /one would get blowed up real good

Including the contest winners after Scott?

Tom, Cal, Naz, Doug, & (Doug's wife) (those last 2 were right next to the couch (Doug was leaning on it). Naz was the only winner away from the couch.

PS: this event could easily stretch to 3 or 4 days and i think there would still be things left not done or not listened too...

Some more good ones.... you guys will have to help me with names. My one recommendation for the next event would be name tags with monikers.

Pair of the bigger Hemps playing in the OB setup.

given enough attendance and a modest cover charge, perhaps a short ship cruise could be organized for John & Donna

anyone have a bobcat or front end loader they could bring along?

Golden Ears Terry Olsen judging... Cal with hands in pockets, .... next gentleman is Doug (???) and Tony, the party bouncer in the last seat.

see, Cal is ambidexterous after all- (you know there's no bottoms to those pockets, eh?)

I think the gentleman to Tony's left is Doug - responsible IIRC for the delightfully massive E-linear
