Computer Speaker Repair.

hi.

this is my first post... here at diyaudio.com looks like a great forum from what i've read.

a couple years i purchased the altec lansing acs48 speaker system for my pc. i fried one of the satellites one day and put them away. i'm on my 4th set of computer speakers now... the logitech z560's.

anyhow i'd like to have a go at fixing the broken satellite unit as it seems easy to get at the driver.

all i know about the satellites is that midrange driver is that its a altec lansing model,(A2156) and a 3/4" tweeter unknown make.

The 3" Midrange's specs are(from what i can gather)
4 ohm's
20 Watts per channel RMS at 0.8% THD

this is apparently being powered by 3 TDA7294 IC amplifiers.

i after scouring the net for midrange driver suppliers i came across these fullrange drivers from partsexpress.com. the tang band W3-594S 3" SHIELDED DRIVER. stats below.

Power Handling: 15 watts RMS/30 watts max * Voice coil diameter: 3/4" * Nominal Impedance: 8 ohms * Re: 6.6 ohms * Frequency range: 100-20,000 Hz * Fs: 100 Hz * SPL: 87 dB 1W/1m * Vas: .06 cu.ft. * Qms: 6.59 * Qes: .71 * Qts: .64 * Xmax .4 mm

what i want to know is that is this a good replacement unit for the previous midrange drivers? what else would make a good replacement?

thanks !!!

The TBs are probably a better driver then were in the Altec & are related to the TBs in your Logitecs. The hot 3" TB is the W3-871 (there is a pin-cusion framed one the same but for the different basket). The W3-594S is the pin frame verion of the W3-879S which i have a set of (have a boo at the "Tale of Two Tangbands" thread.

so exactly which tang band drivers does logitech uses in their speakers (560). And are there posted t&s parameters on this driver on the net? I'm thinking about using two of those drivers to make a ML TQWT project or something along those lines.
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

The "W3-665SC" - not listed on the tang band site, or anywhere else I've been able to find.

I'm guessing you'd be able to get better results with one of their other drivers anyway - probably the only advantage to the driver Logitech used was price when purchased thousands at a time.

EDIT: Now that I read the thread more carefully I see that planet10 mentioned the "W3-871" - I didn't mean to contradict you so abruptly, maybe they are the same driver labelled differently for some reason?

ACS48 replacement - TB W3-594?

Greetings:

I'm in the same boat as original poster -- Altec Lansing ACS48 with a blown mid driver (A2156). I looked at the Tang W3-594 at Partsexpress.com, and I don't think it will do the trick -- too big for the opening in the ACS48 satellite (2.75" opening, driver is 3" exactly, obviously). I'm a driver newbie, and kinda flailing around here; I'd love some advice as to what the best unit is to replace the blown driver with.

Thanks tons.

Lincoln
