My Projector in a trunk

Ok I am lazy - and cheap, I have lots of junk

I tried the OHP way and still had to get a
250W HQI Metal Halide setup so I decided
to gut the OHP and make a projector with
the parts

The light will be here tomorrow
so most of its done except for final
placement of things - nothing
is bolted down - except the focus
assembly - I used the
"DIY Projector Company"
idea for the focus assembly,
and modified it for my use

Here is what I used for a box

I got my HQI setup - it a lot bigger than I thought

the lamp is about 1 inch around and 6 & 1/2 long
the ballast it the size of a house brick and the lamp
holders with lamp are about 7 & 1/2 inch

Only had the lamp and ballast 2 hours - but I have been
working on the wiring and fans - and had to junk that
lamp holder and make new one to hold the longer unit

the ballast is about 1/2 a inch, about a centimeter above
the plastic wall of the trunk - is that ok, there will
be a fan blowing on it as will there be a fan on the lamp
and holder

here is what it looks like now - the power strip is for my 12v
power supply for the fans and for the 12v power supply for
the lcd

HOLY CR@P THATS BRIGHT - I am using dark sunglasses
and "NOT" looking into the lamp, and my eyes still hurt

Its not even half of what the Halogen was heat wise -
or at least thats what it feels like - I got my hand near
the lamp with it on and I smell burnt flesh, not touching
it - about 6 inch away - I removed my hand quick -
I hope thats not going to give me sunburn - I did not
feel burning- - but - - Little question how dangerous
is this thing

I am trying to get the cone of light centered at the focus
assembly - I will have to adjust the lamp holder with it on

Looking Good!

Thanks for the step by step, Will! I love the tool chest approach. Can't wait to see the results once you get everything fine tuned. I'm still using a OHP with a QA-1650 panel, but I have a 7.2 widescreen LCD comin' that I got off ebay that I plan to strip down and put in a custom case. Was thinking of MFD or Wood, but maybe I'll swing by the Wallmart and check out the hardware section 🙂

Keep up the good work and keep the updates comin!!

Congrats on your efforts thus far Will very inginuitive approach with the tool trunk mate 🙂

The placement of the control gear for your lamp might see it getting a little on the hotside bud (i have been reliably informed the ballast gets to around 50 degrees)...perhaps some flashing an additional fan or maybe a larger fan or even moving it out of the path of the light might be a good idea (although due to size constraints this might not be an option)

Food for thought anyways Will...really looking forward to viewing your results, keep up the good work mate and get some sleep dude lol

p.s I checked out your personal website, very cool mate...seems you have had a bit of a struggle in your earlier years hope things are a little easier for you now mate 🙂

Thanks every one - I just woke up

I do have sunburn on my fore arms and fingers
leson learned, were gloves and long sleave
shirt and sunblock - and real good sunglases
- UV LIGHT :hot:
I washed my hands in warm water when I woke
up - bad idea!!!!!!!!!

Later on I will post picks but I got classes
to night and need to take a test

The balast has a 12v fan blowing on it from the outside
and the balast is just a little above the box bottom
for air to flow under

And the light holder has a 120v fan - the one out of the
OHP, blowing on the lamp and lamp holder

The ballast is 1 inch below the edge of the metal lamp
holder - It does get warm but not hot

there are 3 fans in the back 1 blowing in 1 blowing out
and one blowing on the lamp holder

and there is only 1 fan after the frensel blowing in,
and the out, is the hole for the focus assembly,
and I will put a filter that fan to keep dust off my
LCD and lens

Appologies Will my mistake ... from the angle of the previous pics i didnt see the exact fan and ballast placement bud, seems you have it sorted mate keep up the excellent work 🙂

hehe im no stranger to sunburn (living in Austrlai its hard to avoid lol) it is uncomfortable aint it lol...your a crafty fella though Will, with the use of some aluminium foill maybe your projector could double as a tanning booth lol

Jokes aside...looking forward to seeing the pictures this puppy produces 🙂
