I recently purchased an Optoma EzPro 680 off ebay. The projector is functioning alright but the replacement bulbs cost almost $500.00. So needless to say this projector will need an alternate light source or the garbage when the bulb dies. I've been searching feverishly to find a suitable bulb. The typical 400 and 250W mh's are too large. Hqi's are nice but stil alot of work. Then I came across the Osram HSD 250 and the Philips MSD 250. Not dirt cheap (about $125.00), but definitely more affordable than $500.00. The arc length, dimensions and output are near identical to the USHIO UMI & UMR 250's which are specifically designed for LDC and DLP projectors. The arc tube looks exactly like the one in my my original light engine but is encapsulated! So my next venture might be looking for a suitable reflector and BAMMMM a replaceable bulb for this commercial projector for about $100.00. The other option is breaking the glass and using the arc tube but too dangerous and much like work. Just thought I might pass on some of my findings and maybe get some shared input.

this will not work well
Hi, I love your idea and have been wanting to do this myself.
BUT
You cannot replace the ushio DC lamps with an OSRAM AC lamp.
doing so will overheat one of the electrodes and damage the lamp. You can tell if your lamp is DC because one of the electrodes will be larger than the other. AC (sine current and square current) lamps have electrodes of the same size.
