Hi,
I have started a new project. A 17" wide screen projector. I have had all the
stuff laying around for months. Just had to get to it, off my butt.
Credit has to go to Cruser. He helped inspire me, he was also the first
to use this SGI panel i believe. After a couple emails from him, and no
progress to report, i just had to get started.
So it began this 4th of July weekend. Using the SGI LCD panel, and
against my better judgment, the Ushio 400w metal halide lamp. Folks
have reported great things about this lamp. So i'm game to try it. I tend
to like short arc lamps better.
Basically, i have no shop setup at the moment. This thing is being built
with hacksaw and drill. And no time to speak of with a 3-year old 🙂🙂🙂
It will be coffee table style in a nice cabinet. That way it can be placed
out into the room and still look nice.
I picked an all hardwood toy chest to put it into. Note, these chests may
be an option for folks building Brian's Lumenlab projector.
Just started, so here are a few pics of my progress so far.
For those looking for my old thread on spare lenses and stuff,
I guess i must have hit a nerve, with some of the business folk lurking
around here with my selling off, my surplus fresnel and projection lenses.
So, if your interested in that old junk, just give me an email. Sorry, i don't
have a web business you can go to see them. They deleted my
previous thread and pics on that subject. How sad, on with the new.

Looks good man. It's nice to see someone else using the SGI 1600SW for a projector. Resolution to spare!
Are you getting some of Alan's new fresnel's, or do you have some big ones already?
Keep the thread updated as you can, love to see people building high res projectors.

Tony,
What are you planning to run the monitor with, A Pc? I have one of these monitors and I'm curious to see if it can be run some other way besides the Rev 9 cards/PC.

faithblinded,
yep, the more resolution the better. i ordered a set of alan's
new 15" fresnel lenses. they came in yesterday. have not
had time to cut and test them yet. can't wait.
slizm,
i have to use a pc/macintosh to run these. i purchased some
adapters that allow you to use different cards than the old
number 9's. there are three different new adapters that i know
of. all kind of expensive $200-300. these are external adapters,
so i could use a laptop computer to run the sgi.

Tony,
I'm also starting a 17 inch projector soon. I like your lightbox you have put together, and am curious where you got your condenser lens from. Also I sent you an email about the triplets you had.

wakeav8b,
the condenser is some more surplus finds. it is for an art projector
about 4" diameter little under 300mm focal. initial tests showed
it would cover the needed size with room to spare. double stacked
my work for a 15" lcd but too tight a fit with the sgi, given the ushio
bulb and outer jacket is so large.
plugged in the light box last night for the first time. no sparks🙂
appears to work well. lots of heat from lamp and that huge
magnetic ballast.

pic, let there be light. nothing blew up yet
hehehehe give it time, watch the condenser.
Keep up the good work
Trev🙂
Your project looks very neat and tidy,
if the picture looks as good as your
wooden box, you're gonna be a very happy
dude 🙂

pic, the first dvd, standard nemo shot. understand i have not
aligned anything yet, and my first surface mirror is in a cardboard
box held in by tape 🙂 just could not resist putting up a picture. now,
the tweeking starts. screen is six foot wide, lights on in the
other room. brightness of projector is poor, just a couple hundred
ansi lumens.

one last shot of lord of the rings. color is off on my setup. i don't
have much color control over setting on this dvi monitor. nice to have
such a high pixel count, it helps a great deal with the screen door. you
have to be right on the screen to notice it. thats it for now. when i
get a chance to work out the bugs, i will post more.
