I'm not sure if these are real. Take a look at this:
http://www5.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11704
I bought one (before I'd seen that thread), and it seems to work okay. It's got some odd quirks, though. For instance, I'm using it as a volume control, and I get maximum volume at about 70% rotation -- beyond that the volume goes down a little. Could just be I wired it up wrong, though.
In the end, it sounds fine, and it's relatively cheap, so even if it's not really Alps it might still be a good deal.

Seems like they may be better then a pot
Even if they are fake.
An attenuator for this price is great.
Also seems like you can order them direct for a bit of savings.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Wai Kei Leung says that the following stepped attenuator values are available: 10k 20k 50k 100k 250k 500k. They are $6 each with a minimum order of 4.

What a long thread over at head-fi. They are clearly not Alps pots, and are made by this company:
http://www.cxzhenwei.com/english/cpzs-pro01.htm
The action is said to not be very good and half the people claimed that they clicked between positions.
Nevertheless, $6 seems to be a decent deal for a stepped attenuator.
The knob is also difficult to deal with. It is too long for most knobs, and when you crop it shorter, it is difficult to get a knob that fits it properly.
I have a black beauty detented stereo attenuator in my amplifier now, which I wish I could find more of for a good deal. I paid $35 for it from Percyaudio.

Hi,
I have one of these e-bay volume controls in service and I found that there is a little bit of contact bounce between detented positions.
I replaced my 100K carbon pot with a 100K alps? and I do not have to turn the new control up as much to get volume. Maybe the 100K rating is not that accurate.
When the volume control is set it works very well. I would buy another.

Yea.. I have a pair of these from eBay.. Starts popping at about 9:00 position through about 11:00. I have noticed that the more I use them, the more they pop... Will replace with higher quality when time permits..
btw, this is my second set

Yes, I tried that and it did help just a little. However, didn't take long to get back to fairly loud popping..
Anyhow, I don't change the volume that often..

ALPS on EBAY
I bought an ALPS 50K on Ebay from MYADAPTER.
It showed up (from Hong Kong) in good time and I though I had a bargain.
The ALPS snapped crackeled and poped. It was breaking the contacks. I had the ALPs in the feedback loop of an 825 OP amp circuit and promply blew a test speaker. The ALPS was $12.00
I then wen to a Noble (for 19.95) and it works great.
I took the ALPS apart and cleaned it with a pencil eracer. Still broke contact.
I had $12.00 worth of fun and get to complain.
Almost as good as if it worked.

When I started the thread I thought I was bringing something worthwile to everyone's attention.
Now the jury seems to have come in.
At least the thread reader's won't be wasting their money on that item.

Ciscokid - and how does it work and sound?? Does it pop between switching?? Or are/were you satisfied with it??
Yes, as mentioned in my previous posts. I have a pair of mono blocks and use one pot in each. One of the first set developed a pop within a few days of use. I ordered a second set thinking that perhaps one of the first was bad. After replacement through, still had the popping between clicks between about 9:00 and 11:00 on the dial. The other monoblock has started popping too, however not as bad just annoying.
Hope this helps..

Thanks Ciscokid
I will try mine today (hehe - yesterday I bought one in the afternoon - glad to get an Alps for a quite reasonable price - in the eveneing I've find out this topic - so now I'm a bit sceptical - but - if it won't pop - then it was a good investment) and report how does it perform ...
Btw - Ciscokid - is it hard to dismantle it?? Are ther any "tricks" I should know if I will have to do it??
Thanks again

well, maybe not so good.
Hmm, I wonder if widening that copper contact patch would help give it a better connection to the contacts on the wafer.
Oh well, guess I better play it safe, and stick with the crappy pots I have, at least they don't pop and click.

Re: ALPS on EBAY
pots are such a strange animal that when you use them, you have to use them in such a way that when they pop, they don't cause damages.
Because no matter how good a pot you have, they will pot sometimes. and it is always a risky proposition to NOT consider that when you engineer the design.

Millwood makes a good point.
If we consider a pop a component failure then we should protec against the failure.
A shunt across the pot would prvent this at the sacifice of the gain range.
Of course, as I speak I design so changing the input resistors would compensate for this.

So - after comming home - I just couldn't wait till GC will be finished - I've implemented Alps (or whatever it is) stepped attenuator in a passive preamp - so right now there are his first minutes ..
I will not judge sound yet;
Does it pops?? Yes - the right channel sometimes does - but to hear it - there must be one condition to hear it:
- you must switch it very very slowly
But then again - it pops very very quiet - considering that the cheapest version of 2x12position attenuator I intented to use was almost the same price - but it also poped real loud - this Alps (or whatever it is) is worth of the money ...
OK, I will wait and see what will happened in the future ...
