Help with enclosure design

Hi all, I would like your opinion on this project idea of mine for a floorstander.
I bought two Vifa TC18WG49 (8 ohm) 7 inch mid/bass drivers. I also have a pair of Indian made Peerless mid/bass drivers (12 ohm) and couple of fabric dome tweeters (8 ohm).
Had it not been for financial constraints, I would have made an MTM with the Vifa mid/ bass drivers. But do you think I can put the Vifa and Peerless woofers in parallel and make a two-way floorstander? Or is it better that I make a three-way system?
If this arrangement will work fine, while designing the box, do I have to add up the box volumes for both bass drivers or how do I go about it? The person I bought the Vifas from told me they need about 20L while the Peerless needs about 12L. So will the final enclosure come up to about 32L?

Thanks in advance,
Vivek.

Yes, well I can't find any info on them. So I'm not much of a help.

But you should not mount the two woofer in the same enclosure as I pressume the peerless copy is a 5" and the ViFa is a 7". They will not work very well together.

In fact I would probably set the peerless copy aside and only use the vifa woofer in a two-way speaker because the Vifa speaker ae quite good, and very capable of going up to the tweeter.

We used to get them in India but they stopped selling them now. Someone on this forum had mentioned that they are available in Canada.
The Vas of the Vifa is 44L. Will a bookshelf do or will I get better performance out of a floorstander?

You decide really. But a 73 liter box might be just a little bit big for bookshelf speaker.

If you make a box with these internal measurements it will fulfill your purpose.

WARNING INTERNAL MEASUREMENTS

20 cm wide
40 cm deep
100 cm high

That's 80 liters, but with bracing, drivers, port, filter etc it'll be about 72-75 liters when completed.

Thanks for that. But could you compare in short bookshelf Vs. floorstander. If you can suggest a website where these are explained, I will be grateful. I have been searching the net but have not found what I am looking for.
Space is not a constraint for me. If my Vifa will sound better (I mean bass) in a floorstander, fine. If my driver will perform better in a bookshelf, I am for it. What do you say?
For the measurements you suggested, it has to be a floorstander.

If you want my opinion. I don't like bookshelf speakers at all. This is due to the proximity of walls giving the bass a boost, but also a quite uncontrolled behaviour.

I'd build the cabinet I proposed above and place it around 40-60 cm from the back wall, and at least twice that to the nearest side wall.

But that's only my opinion, and others may have different preferences.

Good luck! 🙂

Hi Vivek and Nielsen,
For purely aesthetic (read: WAF!) reasons, Bookshelf speakers (maybe on stands, google "Stubby") are better. But they need subs, esp. for HT use.

I bought two SKO130s from a store in Mumbai around 6 months back. Not having seen one before, I wouldn't know if it is an original or not, it cost me Rs. 650 each (!!!) and I've recently built a rather shabby looking sealed MDF cabinet for them and TW69 tweeters. To my non-audiophile ears, they're infinitely better than the Creative itty-bitties I've been using all this while, so I'm happy. I wrecked the diaphragm of one of them during testing by being overenthu when removing the Rs. 5 coins I used as weight ! I also bought a pair of LK76 3" and a pair of LKO100 4". Boxes for these remain in my head. 🙂

BTW, my SKO130s are rated at 8 ohms, and measure roughly 6.5 - 7 ohms. I say roughly because even the smallest vibration causes my multimeter to go nuts when connected to this driver.

There were two stores selling the speakers in Mumbai, one of them is called Dev Electronics (Shop # 63, 1st Floor, Rajesh Bldg, Lamington Rd), the other one I forget. Could someone knowledgeable tell me if I was duped or not? Thanks!

Now Vivek, where did you lay your hands on those Vifas?

Check the thread (India) Chassis, knobs, PCB makers in the "Electronics and Parts" forum. It's turned out to be quite an interesting collection of pointers and facts, based on all our collective databases. The reappearance of Vifa drivers in India was brought to our attention by Angshu in that thread.
