TL072ACP and NE5532AN- Anything better out there?

Hi,

I have a digital Cinema-Processor that is kind of noisy. It uses a TL072ACP after D/A for output and a NE5532AN before A/D for input. I think the D/A and A/D is just fine, CS5336 and CS4328. But is there anything better out there as a direct replacement for these OP amps? I've looked up for older Threats, but found nothing regarding the noise of these OPs...

Thanks a lot,

Max Biela

What is the reason why the NE5534 and 5532 sound ( supposedly) inferior to the newer gen chips like OPA2134, AD826 etc.
Yes it is slower , has more distortion etc.

Is it possible to add external circuitry that could possibly improve its performance ? Additional input stage , lighter load by using a buffer and classA biasing ...anything ?
Or is the core so messed up that nothing else will work.
Cheers.

Althou opamps have noise figures, I don't think they are critical to ears. It could be from higher amplification stage. Circuit that comes with TL072/TL082/NE5532 usually comes with cheap capacitors. Circuits like this always have some caps in the signal path. Changing to more expensive opamp without changing the cap in the signal path is usually less preferable than keeping the cheap opamp while upgrading the cap in the signal path

The 5532 and 5534 can still hold their own in comparison with more recent op-amps, provided that they are used correctly. They have poor dc performance and quite high input currents, so they should only be used in low-impedance circuitry. Provided that their limits are understood, the audio performance is very high.

NE5534 is not slower and does not have higher THD than opa134, it's a opamp with marvelous performance and highly underestimated....in all my circuit's it's on par with opa627, and better than opa227, opa134, lt1007, easier to wotk with than and more economical than AD797, opa637..

I am very positive about NE5532/34 OPs.
After many listening compares in most situations NE gives more musical and balances sound than all modern OPs from BB or AD.
Music simple flow ,and there is no talking about bass or hights , they are simply natural. Offcourse if they are properly used like in my Studer CD players.

I like NE5534.

It is a very good OP-amp and very useful.
It is much lower in price, than more modern OP-amps with slightly better data in some respects.
But they can have worse data than NE5534 in other parameters.

Now is a good time buy a large number of NE5534
before they stop making them.

It should be noted, that NE5532 is not a dual NE5534.
Dual of NE5534 is called NE5533.
NE5532 is not as good as NE5534, even if NE5532 is not a bad OP-amp.
Better use 2 NE5534 than 1 NE5532, in my opinion.

"One particular nice feature of the NE5534 is that the openloop gain is constant up to 10kHz"

Not sure of that : the open loop gain is not as high as that.
The good performances come from a high open loop gain due to three voltage staged instead of two, usually, and a sophisticated compensation.
