Gain Settings for Components

I have a question regarding components that have individual gain controls connected to my preamp.

I typically will set the component source volume at max and then use the volume control on the preamp to control level to my amp.

Is there any advantage to decreasing gain on the source compenent and increasing gain on the preamp?

I have experimented with this and can't detect any audible difference. Just wondering if there's a theoretical justification for establishing levels.

Best signal to noise ratio is obtained with sources outputting full level, then reducing it down with the amp.
