They could use bass horns, but only the back of the theater would get the full bass response. With the advent of modern high power amplifiers, bass horns (Altec VOT) have been replaced with large direct radiating subs. The JBL dual 18" sub is a great box. It's 1200 watts at 4 ohms, and stays pretty clean all the way down. These drivers are also used in JBL's SR4719X live PA box.

Before you get carried away, check the specs. Most cinema and Pro audio subs use the -10dB point for calculating frequency response, rather than the -3 or -6 points we are familiar with. :)

And yes, they will sell to anyone that has the cash, though you're probably looking at around £1500 or more a box new.

Yes, for that price I could build several of Mikee12345's 30Hz horns and reach the same SPL levels in the same frequency range...
