The more research I do the more I keep coming back to the Proteus by Tony G.. Looking for a big soundstage. Room is 12 by 20 w/8ft ceiling. Got a good deal on MF A5 int. amp and CD, so thats my system so far. I have no speakers at the present time. I'm wondering about other projects besides The Proteus that would throw a big soundstage and is dynamic. Like to stay with standmount. Budget up to 1,000. Any suggestions or thoughts are welcome.

Thanks for the replies. I have checked out Zalytron and madisound extensively. Liked some of what I saw but I think The proteus is documented very well and might be easier to make minor adjustments when in my room. The all eminance thread was cool. Not sure if that project or the Statements will work in my room, They might be a tad bit on the large size. The Mini Statements might work though. I know I will not stop after my first project, so one of your suggestions might be my 2nd project. I say this because of the research I have done and a project from Tony g., Troels or zaph seem to be the way to go for me. I will do some more research due to all of your suggestions and try to be open minded.
Thanks again for the replies.

If you desire a stand mounted design and have the cash.. I believe that the "DIY Hi End For Beginners" will be stand mounted, (looking at the pic.), and give you what you want (..and possibly then some;) ).

Bottom of this Troels's page:

http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/pipeline.htm

Obviously it isn't finished yet.. but it shouldn't be that much longer before he comes out with the published design.

There is also the D44 and R44 here:

Again, not finished either.. AND they would need a subwoofer that extended into the upper bass region (unless you choose to build the floorstand versions).

Scott,
Thanks for the lead. The lineup series MAXX'S look like they might work. Floorstanders but slim. The drivers look awful good. Have you any experience with these Tangbands? If I don't build these for 2 channel then I think I will build them for video system. They will finish up nicely with a pearl-silver finish and black baffle. Thanks again for the reply. I'll wait for the final documentation then order the divers and parts. Cabinets look simple. Damn this gets addictive.

No experience.. Realistically though, its probably the best HiFi midrange on the market (..low mass, foil-based design with almost no break-up resonance). I *wish* it were considerably more efficient though, but thats a different category. It is however very low in price for what it is, both physically and measurably (..when compared to other offerings).

As I've cautioned b4.. on that thread and others, to get maximum detail and soundstage reproduction - you should consider *no* box "stuffing" for the midrange section, rather using this instead:

(..multiple coats (3-5) on all interior cabinet surfaces.)

Big soundstage?

You want a line array. Huge soundstage, enormous dynamic range, high sensitivity, very very low distortion. And you want electronic crossovers, and bi or tri amping.

Mine look like this: http://pub48.bravenet.com/photocenter/album.php?usernum=4095425731&album=48032

There's a huge discussion about them and about line arrays in general at:

Why fool around with dinky little miniature music when you can have very close to the real thing.

You might notice that owner of the "statements" (which also use the little Tangband 4" titanium foil drivers) - ALSO has a line array. In fact his line array may be a bit better than yours (..though certainly price isn't always indicative of quality). In other words you can get an opinion from someone who has BOTH types of loudspeakers, rather than simply assuming that you will necessarily end up with "dinky little miniature music". ;)

Zarathu,
Wow, that might be an overwhelming project for me at this point. I appreciate your thoughts and will keep LA's on my radar in the future. I would like to get my project done in a decent time frame. If I took that on I'd be over my head ( I think).

Scott,
Thanks again.
