I have an mp3 player with memory, wich uses a R3 (AAA) power baterry. It also works fine with AAA NiMH rechargeable battery 1.2V/850mAh.
My problem: I want to use an external power supply delivering 1.5V 200mA. My player does not start when connecting 1.5V external supply.
I tried with a linear variable power source 1.5-20V / 1A with LM317 and then a switching mode power supply with MC34063. The player did not start.
The filtering capacitor was 0.1F/5.5V, much more than needed, I suppose.
Where could be the problem?

is your filtering capacitor physically small or large?

if it is small, then it may be a super cap which is not meant to filter any ripple. get a proper electrolytic cap.

super caps have very large values for small size but they cannot put out large peak currents. they are designed to hold voltages for clocks or memories.
