Transformer tape

I have recently removed the plastic covering on a toroidal transformer to replace the thermal fuse. What is the best tape to use to replace the clear plastic tape that has been removed?

I prefer , electrical tape...like 3M high temp grade...I get it in a cool color like BLUE or RED...and wind it as the last layer...nice clean even overlaps....this tape is flexible...

Kapton is somewhat expensive but *very* well suited for transformer use. It should be available at any half-decent electronics supply.

use the good old masking tape. its cheap, tough, and water proof, and you can get tension on it

What are you Brits using for masking tape? I can assure you that what we use on this side of the pond for painter's masking tape is not tough, not waterproof, does not hold tension well. And it has no business in electrical service, who even knows what temperature or voltage rating it would have!

Kapton can work very well, it has a great temperature rating, but it does have a tendency to tear VERY easily if nicked even slightly (plastics guys say "tear propagation"). So use it carefully. Mylar tapes should work just fine since the temps inside a transformer just aren't terribly high compared to Mylar's softening point. Mylar does not have the tear propagation issues of Kapton.

it has no business in electrical service, who even knows what temperature or voltage rating it would have!

Not to mention that paper tape will catch fire alot sooner than, say, Kapton!

But the fumes from burning paper will be less toxic than cooking plastic giving more time to escape!

SInce this is being used for the outer wrapping...use ELECTRICAL TAPE..... Use the 3M stuff...just wind it neatly with tension and some overlap...it will be your best option....since this is a toroid...
