Car Amp Power Supply

I've got a basic question about building a power supply for a car amp. Generally, do you go to 110V AC and then use a standard transformer or are there step-up transformers that are used to get up to about 35V dc?

Typically car amps use switching power supplies. DC from the battery is chopped into quasi-square waves by switching transistors. This AC can be stepped up and filtered for whatever voltage your amp needs.

It's definitely more complicated than a typical 110V to DC supply.

Do a search in the Car Audio forum for SMPS or Switch Mode Power Supply, and you should find plenty of discussion and links.
