I used 1n4007's on a valve mixer and it had trouble with switching spikes getting into the audio.
I swapped them out for fast HER158G's and the spikes went.
What size were your filter capacitors?
Imagine those spikes are on the AC input. They will ride right on through and onto the supply. One thing most people don't understand is that the 1N400x diodes are highly engineered. Other type number diodes are normally specialist types for specialist situations. You shouldn't need them in every day designs.
