Balanced 230v mains supply - oppinions please!

The RCD has to be around the cables feeding current to the receiver circuits.
It detects out of balance in the Flow and Return and opens the two Live conductors.

It is the non detection of current returning to the earth bond and thus back to the secondary (but not using the cable route) that is seen as a leakage fault.
 
and a separate earth only for the HiFi would also be a good choice

Very dangerous idea! All grounds into a building must be bonded together, at least in the USA but I'm fairly sure all world electrical codes do the same.

The main danger is lightning. A strike to the earth could place thousands of volts at hundreds of amps between the two ground rods due to earth resistance.
