Default PS Amp Question

A quick question, please. If a single-channel amp requires a 40v input to output 160 watts, does the power supply need to provide 2 amps or 4 amps?

You say "amp...output" but do you mean power supply DC watts output or amplifier AC watts output?

It's 80V across + to - so 2 amps for the power suppy to deliver 160 watts, but that's not 160 output from the amplifier output; in real life it depends on the amplifier class, exact efficiency, speaker impedance, and maybe even the nature of the signal material. A conventional power supply may need to supply 10 amps without voltage drop to make a class-A amp put out 160 watts into a low-impedance load continuously. Or a switching-mode supply into a class-D amp only 2.1 amps.

10Apk to 20Apk, depending on how severe the reactance of the speakers and the type of music you listen to.

Certainly not 2A to 4A.
