I wouldn't be ashamed, getting anything to work is hard. I worked on a vehicle system where the voltage drop down between the battery and the inverter was about 2 V until it was rewired.
I think that the efficiency looks quite reasonable.

I'm not sure of your circuit but at 6.12 A the SR5100 is a little ungenerous. I have looked at a data sheet from MOSPEC and the forward voltage is curving up beyond about 3 A. It is typically 0.7 V at 5 V according to the graph. So higher current rated schottky diodes might gain a little improvement.

At high currents I have had success making high current transformer windings with copper strip.

Congrats on the efficiency. Rule one is always check the fuses (meaning check the simple stuff first).
