Default psu manufacture

hi,

total noob to these forums and most the stuff that is discussed.

when powering an amplifier i've seen (what i assume to be) 2 methods. buying a switching PSU pre-made and hooking it up within a case and the transformer into power board route.

as far as i understand the whole power supply subject you need

step down transformer->rectifier->smoothing capacitor->regulator.

from pictures i think most prefer a 'toroidal transformer' into a powerboard -> amplifier module.

what advantages are there in using this method over an open case meanwell PSU? cost? performance?
