Default F&T PS caps opinions

I'm looking for 2 x 47uf or 1 x 100uf/450V PS filter cap to replace the std 1 x 47uf/450 electrolytic Illinois cap in my Fender Pro Junior guitar amp. I'm thinking of F&T electrolytic caps because of their compact size (21mm OD x 35mm L) but also my impression that their quality as a bit better than the run of the mill electro.

Is this impression justified? Is there anything better around with a similar physical size? Nichicon VX any better? The quality Nichicons, Elnas, slit-foils etc don't seem to go to 450V.

Another thought is to remote mount some larger Solens or Jantzen Crosscaps-would it be worth the trouble?

If you can afford I will go for these ASC oil filled MKP model X386S 440VAC

Nichicon KX series also good but are lytics (less quality) but price is more economical, available at Mouser:

Dufus, do you mean the Mundorf MLytic 50+50/500V? Would they be an improvement on 2x single F&T 47uf/450V? The size of 35mm x 50mm is good. I read somewhere that F&T actually make the Mundorf caps-any confirmation on this? The size and specs from the data sheets below are identical.

Mundorf M-Lytic HV Capacitors

F&T Can Capacitor 50µF x 50µF / 500V

Merlin, I didn't think the KX come in 47uf/450V but I will check. As to the ASC caps I would love to fit these but they are absolutely huge (63mm x 115mm) and I would have to mount 2 of them remotely somewhere with long leads and would take up alot of air space in the small 10 inch speaker cabinet. Nevertheless is there any problem with using long leads to remote mount large capacitors?

The F&T should be clear improvement over stock cap.If you want to spend more get the Mundorf.
You can't go wrong.

Yes thanks Merlin, I would have to use 1x 100uf KX.

Is this the correct order of excellence (and size!)?

1. Continental A cap
2. GE motor start
3. ASC X386
4. Solen, Jantzen etc polypropelene
5. MLytic
6. F&T, JJs etc
5. Nichicon KX
4. Nichicon VX
5. Xicon
6. Illinois

Continental are very well regarded by Elliot of Altavista Audio (designer Counterpoint), I have ASC X386S and are also very good, I don't know the quality of GE motor start. My opinion is: always better a film than a lytic cap so it's seems your list can be OK.

Hi Dufus,

what makes the Mundorf caps superior in comparison with the F&T's? Is it perhaps just the money one has to spend for them?

Best regards!
