Hopefully someone can shed light on a questions which as been bugging me since starting my last build...
Let us say I intend to use 2x 45v rails. I have a board which has 4x 80v capacitors wired in series (so theoretically good for a total voltage differential of 160v)...at the end of the path I originally intended to use 2 large 40,000uf caps in series rated 100vdc each. Now the question I have is: Can the capcitors be wired in parallel thus effectively doubling the capacitance to 80000uf? Is there any sonic/electrical disadvantage to having capacitors in parallel rather than in series? Thanks Alex |

In a single supply full bridge amp yes, in a half bridge no. In the half bridge supply the caps are not really in series, but filter two separate supplies that alternately get loaded to common. You need two separate caps (banks).

I have a full wave rectifier board with a +/- 45v rails
Could you please elaborate as to why this cannot be done with a full wave amp? ![]() Thanks! |

You can't confuse the power supply configuration with the amp configuration.
If your amplifier output returns to common/ground you need two filter capacitors, two handle changing currents in both supplies. |
