Default Radiated Emission Tests

HI..

I am planning to conduct RE pre compliance tests in a Lab, but before doing so i am keen on conducting the RE test in my workplace lab, which has a Spectrum analyser.

Although i have used spectrum analyser for conducting my Conducted emission tests, i would like to know, is there any crude way of conducting the RE test. If yes, what is the setup and how genuine will the results will be for making changes, to improve the result.

Any method of doing this test in normal lab setup is invited.

Thanks
Vasu

Well first you would have to do a background scan with your unit turned off placing your antenna 1 meter from the unit that you will test. Where I used to work we scanned from 1MHZ to 18GHZ, This takes a lot of different antennas. Now after you have scanned the area once with horizontal polarity you have to rotate the antennas 90 degrees and scan the area again for vertical polarization. This is your baseline scan. The frequencies that exceed your EMI standard will not give useful information when you turn your unit on.
Turn you unit on and scan all the frequencies with both polarities and find which frequencies that exceed your EMI standard.
It works well if you fail your lab scan and just have a few problem frequencies to work on.
It is best to use a ferrite lined shielded room or at least a screen room to get good results.
