Default floating power supply designs

U.S. Patent # 2,895,059 was mentioned over on the Zen -> Cen -> Sen thread, and subsequently compared to a couple of other schematics. Zen -> Cen -> Sen, evolution of a minimalistic IV Converter

The whole subject has me very curious to understand these 'floating' supplies better, but I didn't want to continue any further off-topic chatter.

Does anyone care to discuss?
