Default Is this really an SMPS?

A nice quick question from a proper newbie.

This says it is a true Switch Mode Power Supply, can this be true?

NEW 12V 5A (12V 4A) Switch Mode Power Supply, Inc VAT | eBay

Thanks

TD

Sure looks like a typical "line lump" SMPS. And as Nigel says, too small for a transformer of that capacity. For the price it's worth a look.
What do you plan to power with it?

More than enough, for sure. Try it and let us know. I've found that many of these sound slightly different. DVE brand has been my fave so far.

Thanks for the info. I don't have the amp yet nor the ability to test against other power units. I will endeavour to give some feedback however.

My trusty old Weller TCP soldering iron is powered by a 24 V, 60 W switchmode supply of about the same size. I think I paid an entire $5 for it on ePay. It was labeled as the supply for some obscure printer I think.

I would ask the seller what brand it is, some generics are pretty crude, dirty output and short lived so I would avoid it if you don't recognize the brand.

The brand is STIGER, and manufacturer is Stiger Int. Ltd. (China).

That doesn't ring any bells with me, but it still seems a reasonable, cheap option compared to the standard Regulated supplies, doesn't it.

Why do laptop power adapters cost so much compared to this?
