is it possible to make a transformer out of choke?

I have found the muffle core of a public lighting that looks exactly like EI transformer core,only the middle pillar is a 3mm shorter than two side pillars. If i would rewind it into a transformer i would make it E/I/E/I/E/I/E alternating side of each layer one after other,but my question is-is it worth trying,what would be the result? Would it be reliable transformer or something that might work,BUT... ? Here are some pictures...

I think you call this a 'choke'. A muffler is the sound pipe underneath a car....

It will work as a transformer but it wont be very efficient because of the air gaps.

Chokes and Transfromers have different magnetic requirements.

Hi,

It would work if you rotated every other layer so there is no air gap.

It would saturate first at the point of the air channels, effectively
meaning you have less iron in the core than it would first appear.

Those air channels would not cause inefficiency, it will work.

I have decided to turn them back and wait for better chance with other transformer core...I have four of these and it is too much job and not much profit. If I have to make it by my hands,I´ll try to make it worth. Thanks for advices everyone!

Cut the Legs back to the same length as the center pillar...with a sharp shears. Then file and lap the edges en mass by clamping in a vice. Alas too late because you returned them;(
