Gentlemen,
I've seen both grounded & ungrounded methods of wiring rectifiers & I need guidance for the best way for the PS I'm building. I have two 5R4GYA direct heated cathode rectifiers with two 5V 5A filament transformers without center taps. I plan on tying the filaments & transformers together in series & using the center connection to feed the choke input filter(s). Is there a need for "transformer phasing", should I wire terminal #1 to #1 or terminal #2 to #1 ? Is there any need to use the alternate grounded "CT" wiring method? I hope my question makes sense. yes phase matters, wrong phase and they buck each other. for positive HV choke connection the cathodes are connected. so that makes sense if you want to combine filaments there. probably connect 2 to 1 to stack voltages, if they are wound identical. Easy to check your own work with a test 12V bulb before connection to HV.

Thank you for responding. I must be having a senior moment, I know that there would be 10vac on the outside connections when #2 is tied to the other's #1, but what would there be if I (incorrectly) tied #1 to the other's #1 ? Just to confirm: I would not series wire the filaments to use the 10vac. Each filament would have it's own 5vac transformer, and there is no connection to ground. |

I have a feeling you are not asking the question you want to know. what are you trying to achieve?,
when they are in phase they are bucking from # 2 to #2 since there is a common connection at center the #1s, each filament is free to run its own separate current. ie 2 circuits with one common connection at the #1s. The cathodes are common at #1 which in turn becomes the source of HV +dc which is then feed to a DC smoothing choke,. BTW I suppose you could reverse everything and feed the DC choke to ground too. I suggest you draw what Im saying to help us/you comprehend.

I'm finding I'm in way over my head with this discussion. I'll have to be satisfied with your directions as to the correct wiring of the filaments to individual trafos & the center tap to the choke input filter. "The devil is in the details" is very true. Thanks, Frank |
