i'm having trouble with the values for the diode bridge in the psu that hiraga suggests for his 20 w class a amp. can anyone clear them up for me?

I would use a bridge rectifier 200volt and 35 amps, about £3.
Try RS, Farnell or Maplin.

one more question nigel: with all the capacitance in this power supply, wouldn't a soft start a soft start circuit impose itself?
