Hello,
if i was to use a voltage multiplier to get 100v to 400v, how much more current would i need to power an amp? the overall current drawn from the amp is about 400mA and i have a 0-100v rated at 2A. will it reduce the curent i can draw without damaging the transformer? im thinking there might be something like 2X(100/400)=max current out, or is this wrong? |

Hi,
Voltage multiplyers don't have good efficiency as it is dependent on the capacitor at the multiplyer stage that is the time constant or charging vs the rectifying section be it silicon diodes or tube.400mA for high voltage supply is not trivial. So for best performance it's best to use proper transformer turns ratio ( step up) to get the high voltage you need.Singa |

Voltage multipliers are a sub-variety of peak rectifiers, which means that for usual power levels and capacitance values found in electronics, the power factor will be around 0.5.
In order to get 400V output, you'll have to use a 3 stage multiplier. Thus, IDC out= 2/(2*3)=0.333A. This value is a crude approximation, and if you need more accuracy, you have to simulate the circuit. |
