I have a 400VA toroid power transformer with 400VCT, 5V 4A and 6.3V 4A secondaries.
I am planning to use it in an EL34 PP amp, so for the heaters I need 1.5A per EL 34 and 0.3A per driver (12AT7). Therefore I will add another secondary at 6.3V. The question is how best to use the secondaries, as this will determine the wire I need for it. I could use a heavy wire, 12G and use the new winding for all 4 power tubes, both channels and the other 6.3v winding for the drivers, both channels. Or, I could use lighter wire, maybe 14G or 16G and use one 6.3V for each channel, two EL34, and their driver. I am planning on regulating the heater voltage for the drivers, so maybe that makes a difference, since if I divide by channel, I will need two regulating circuits. Any reason to think that it will impact sound quality or noise depending on how I do this? |
