Help with Avel Lindberg transformer problem

Hi there,

I've been trying to get a simple 5V power supply up and running this afternoon without any success and I think I have a problem with my transformer.

I'm using an Avel Lindberg 15VA transformer. It has two 115V primaries and two 9V secondaries.

The primaries are coloured blue-grey and violet-brown. After not getting anything working I decided to take the transformer out of the circuit and check the resistance on the primaries. The grey-blue pair measure at 82Ohms but the violet-brown measures anywhere upwards of 2MegOhms!

I guess that's my problem. Has anyone experienced any quality problems with AL transformers?

I happened to buy two of the same range and while trying to cut and strip the other one, the violet lead came out just a little too easily. I'm wondering if they've produced a bad batch or am I just unlucky?

I've not had any problem with their transformers. But some of the old ones were made in North America rather than China like they are now. Are you sure you have the lead colors and windings correct?
