All things being equal, what geometry would you do for balanced 240 in (120+/120-) into a step down trafo and balanced 120 out (60+/60-) given three discrete conductors that you can manipulate however you desired? I was thinking just twist the two 'hots' and then wrap the ground around that and sleeve it, but are there any other ideas out there? Like braiding it? This wil be 3 x 8ga in and a pair of 3 x 12ga out. 37kva trafo 40 amp in 2 x 20 amp out.

The best practice for wiring high-current lines is to make sure feed and return are twisted together.
On the transformer primary, the centre wire will probably not carry a lot of current assuming the voltages are well enough symmetrical. On the secondary, it mostly depends on your loads, and if you have thre freedom, make a 4-wire scheme on the secondary. Take one wire from each outer transformer connection, and two wires from the transformer centre tap connection. Twist one outer wire together with one centre wire. Bakmeel
