Default purpose of zener diode in optocouplers

Hi all,

Attached is a feedback circuit from a +/- 37 V..i just want to know is the zener diode in that circuit essesntial.

Your total zener voltage drop is 74V, so is there voltage to the optocoupler ic.

It's a poor man's regulator. The zeners conduct when the voltage is roughly 74V.(+/-37)
