Computer SMPS X'mer material
 
any idea how to figure out the SMPS X'mer material for a normal PC power supply??..im guessing iron powder since its low frequency...any ideas???

till now i havent seen any iron power core in atx/at psu as a transformer, may be iron power is good for inductor, materials very from manufacture to manufacture, if u diy.ing then material may be not that important, many diy members using those E35 cores without knowing there materials,

hi !
material for pc at X'mer is ferrite.frequency is around 33kHz.
just search for EI 33 core on the web and you'll see different core material that aren't so different from each other...

the power tx is usually ungapped ei ferrite run at 20khz to 40khz

the 'buck' regulator inductors are usually powdered iron of course!

thats about all u really need to know :)

you wanna calculate the flux density the tx is run at...
all you need to know is the voltage at the primary (easy), the cross sectional area of the core, the freq its run at...

id say ~1300 gauss usually

I'd say try either the Amidon #77, or "F" materials (both ferrites) for the Xfmr, and #26 (yellow-white) powdered-iron for the BIG cross-coupled buck inductor.

Two most common frequencies are 36kHz (R(t) = 15kW) or 33kHz (R(t) = 18kW), with C(t) = 1000pF.
