Hi everybody,
I am currently building 4 esl with wire stators. The frame is made of standard furniture panel with melamine toplayer I measured it out with a megger on 2500V and it is totally non conductive (resistance almost 1 Terraohm) On that frame I glued the statorwires, which are isolated copperwires. Now on that frame I glued the spacers. Those are 2mm neoprene strips fixed on the frame with double sided extra strong tape. Now her is (maybe) a problem. I got suspicious because I read here that neoprene seems to be not at all that good isolator I thought it was. So I measured and yes , when I put both probes of the megger (2500V) on the neopren surface I get 300Mohms. This is less then the surface resistance of the coated membrane. Not good I think. BUT, on the other hand..... Is there really a problem???? Because the spacers are fixed on a totally non conductive frame and The statorwires are isolated wires also fixed on that non conductive frame. Is there really a problem????? If I measure the resistance between the copper of the statorwires and the neoprene spacer again with a megger on 2500V I get a resistance around 40Gigaohm So I think the neoprene spacers do not a good job as isolator, but It doesnt really matter in my kind of construction. I like them as spacer because the rubber has a dampenning effect on the membrane and they are easy to work with. I have a set of esls for about 4 years with the same construction and they play well. It's just..... because I maesured it , I started to doubt.... Geert |
