A panel speaker design I've never seen before
 
Does anyone know anything about this basic idea? I'm debating whether or not it's worth $10 for the plans, if only to satisfy my curiosity.

Hi,

It can't be better than the little dynamic driver hidden at the base of the construction which actually drives the membrane indirectly.
Can be fun to build, but I don't expect the same results as electrostatic or ribbon devices. Looks cool, thats true.

I ask myself whether the membrane is really necessary or it is just the little hole that works like an omnidirectional driver.

I see the words "pneumatic" and "reeds". I think it is 2 membrains and air pressure between them gets controled by some type of magnetically controlled reed valve? Just a guess i have no clue what i am talking about.

This 'speaker' actually works as a bipole . Both sides radiate like a 'flat' element. The air pressure coming out of the small hole in the bottom , inflates it and deflates it like a baloon. So both sides are radiating in phase ( bipole ).

You've got some cavity and resonance issues there, but it would be a fun thing to knock together. Whoever builds it should also measure it, my $$$ is on ther frequency response looking ...um...interesting.

Hi,

Its fairly obvious the pneumatic motor assembly never happened,
I presume the plans are for the loudspeaker driven prototype.

You certainly won't get plans that meet the stated specification.

I'm not fond of the author penchant to over-hype himself and the things he builds, often to the point of being what I'd call misleading.

these speakers house a small woofer in their bass which fires through a slot in the bottom of the membrane.
