Talking Magneplanar SMGa upgrades

Did make a few upgrades on my at Audiogon recently phuchased pair of 1987 SMGa "Maggies" ..., x-over capacitor upgrade (Jantzen cross-caps), omitting of the fuse, gold binding posts and new diy stands with spikes ..., the result of the sonic performance is a matter fact very impressive compared to original SMGa'
Side rails where sanded down and currently treated ones or twice a week with oil for dark wood ..., seems like they will soon reach a state of "exotic dark wood" appearance

Now some pictures

Vary nice....great work....i have the Smga,MG2c,2.5r,3as ...but I dont like the sound of any of them with spikes.....Best crossover ever...An all the new .7 have this type of crossover now....only took them 35 years to figg this out...lot of people have put this type of crossover in the Mg2c MMG, 1.6,12s an so on....for the money some say the SMga is the best maggy ever made...lot of fun...goodluck

Tyu ..., why dont you like spikes & what specific negative audible "finger print" does they make on the sonic performance of "Maggies" ???

My SMGa' is placed on tile floors so there is no negative WAF for me to use spikes

Seems to add a hardness to the uper mid...an Top end....
I use rubber 1/2" dots just under the front of the stanes....this give just a littel back Kant....this gives a sweet sound to the maggys .....I also dont like the side reals never use them...with the larger maggy this gives better base....But in the end it what sounds right too you..
The maggys are a lot fun... but i have ESL an Apogees so i dont have maggys setup all the time...goodluck
