DIY ESL: electric strenght of stator insulation?

Another stupid question I didn´t stumble upon an answer so far...

Does it matter to use either single conductor wire or stranded wire? Any difference in the magnetostatic field strenght?

As far as the electrostatic field, there is no difference between solid and stranded wire of the same gauge.

But, for the same gauge, solid wire will be stiffer and allow you to use fewer crossbars spaced further apart.
Fewer glue joints and a more open stator frame

Did anyone try enamelled copper wire so far? Would the the electric strength be big enough?

Well, I thought about that as well, but wouldn't the enamell crack when stretching the wire?????

That was certainly my experience, even with minimal stretching I had cracking problems.

But it can be done if you are careful as moray james has shown.
I believe he used 30 gauge magnet wire spaced 24 wires per inch on Acoustat style stator frames.

I have tested Kynar coverd wire wrap wire with great results of no arc through to above 10kv.
But I haven't built a panel with it yet,when I was going to try then prices started to skyrocket back in 03 and 04.
As I used to get rolls of it fairley cheap at Radio Shack,But not any more!
